Summary
Castiel didn’t know what changed.
He didn’t know how their romance had seemingly faded, like the life of it was seeping through their hands and yet he could not grasp it; could only watch as it slipped through his cold fingertips. Or perhaps he did know. He just didn’t want to admit it. Perhaps it was a desperate wish of remaining in the bliss of ignorance. That maybe if he kept insisting that nothing was broken, then it would come true. But the bliss is a lie, and a blossoming problem which has left them in pieces.

Summary
One of the most terrifying things someone could ever experience is having your memory wiped out, or rather, forgeting it. It's like waking up in a different body, with a different life and with different people around you, except, it's not. It's still you, but the terrifying thing about it is that, you just aren't aware of it.
And maybe Gerard Way felt the same way to some extent-- being forgetful that is. What he doesn't know is that it's more than just being forgetful, it's something more serious. But he refuses to believe that, no- Gerard knows that he's perfectly fine, lonely, but fine.
And the boy with the sad, hazel eyes seems to prove that belief even more. The hazel eyes that he just couldn't forget.

Summary
When Cas finally spoke, it was quiet. “I won’t let anything happen to you, Dean. I promise.”
Dean had never liked protective declarations, though he himself made them on a near constant basis. It’s because they meant someone valued their lives over Dean's, and the guilt that came with that knowledge was cumbersome. As far as he was concerned, it was easier to be a martyr.
But when Cas made yet another promise to protect Dean, something shifted inside his gut. A knowledge that hadn’t fully solidified, hadn’t fully gelled within his insides. And he stood quite suddenly in spite of himself, nearly knocking the chair over in his enthusiasm. Castiel jerked away from him on reflex but softened again when he saw the expression in Dean’s eyes.
A hand, callused and cut across the palm where he’d bled to try to save them both reached across the chasm between their bodies. It cupped the side of Castiel’s cheek, roughly scraping against stubble.

Cas has it hard enough already - his blue hair, piercings, and unique attitude mean that he spends most of his time at school alone, anyway. Meanwhile, Dean's popular enough to bring Castiel some respite from the bullying; or, that is, he would be, if only Cas was connected to Dean in some way. As a friend, perhaps.
