Shane braced himself for a chirp from Ilya at his expense, disappointed how quickly he made himself look like a dork in front of the man he was hoping to woo. Ilya looked him up and down; it was obvious that jokes were generating in his head like the numbers on a slot machine. But a grin crept onto his face, a goofy grin, like Shane’s kitchen mouthwash was the most wonderful thing he had ever heard.

Summary
There was a countdown timer, labelled 'two weeks', behind Shane’s eyes, counting down every single second dutifully, no matter what. Every day, every night, every meal, every laugh, every fuck, constantly the timer was counting down, no matter how much Shane was screaming internally to appreciate what he had right then before it would be taken from him until next year. Whether Shane was living in the moment or not, that countdown did not care that they had already spent their entire relationship stealing moments together whenever they could.
Their entire first year together, their first year finally telling each other the truth, would be spent exactly as it had been since they were teenagers: one of them in Montreal and one of them in Boston, careers too important to risk, settling for fake contact names and quickly fucking in hotel rooms when they played against each other. Except, now that they were honest about their love for each other, their distance would hurt even fucking worse.

Shane nearly drives himself mad, dreading when Ilya will have to leave his cottage in a week. When Ilya decides to stay, he somehow freaks out even more.

Summary
Ilya loves Shane obviously and constantly. He texts Shane stuffed animals in the store when he thinks Shane would find them cute, buys Shane his favorite snacks before he even realizes he needs them, and places his shoes neatly at the front door because Shane likes them that way. Loving Shane is easy.
Shane loves Ilya completely and overwhelmingly. He is as central to Shane's existence as breathing and hockey. He gives his entire self to Ilya, only trusting him with his most vulnerable self and moving mountains to protect their relationship forever. Sometimes he worries himself mad, sure, but he will only ever let Ilya build him back up. Loving Ilya is everything.
Vignettes of Shane being his beautiful autistic self and Ilya loving discovering all of it.

Summary
It wasn't that Ilya'd never seen Shane sick before, or helped him through it. Well, maybe not in their early years. A younger Shane would probably die before letting Ilya notice he wasn't feeling well. Ilya wasn't much better, back then.
But being married and living in the same house (fucking finally) left little space for hiding things like that from each other. While Ilya was still working on letting Shane take care of him when hurting, old ghosts of his past slowly fading away against Shane's tender worrying, his husband was actually a pretty good patient. Aside from the hating-being-sick part, Shane mainly just got a little bossy and a lot clingy when not feeling good. He craved physical comfort in a way Ilya happily obliged.
It was just that he absolutely suffered through whatever illness he had, and Ilya had never seen him this sick before.
Or: Shane suffers at the hands of a suspicious chicken sandwich. Ilya suffers alongside him. He's somehow still incredibly perfect at taking care of him.
