Summary
That future he had hoped for was a one-dimensional representation of what being a pirate was, completely divorced from reality, and while getting away from it felt like crawling through broken glass, he had gotten away from it. Seeing Luffy succeed where Crocodile had failed was calling all of that meticulous repression and calculated abandonment (of dreams and of people) into question. Crocodile had muted that part of his ambition decades ago as a survival impulse, a way to compromise and to keep living. What in the hell gave Monkey D. Luffy the right to embrace it?
