Mike's heart drops. He glances at his baby sister, who freezes at the unexpected call. It's a one in a million chance - and yet Holly seemed to inherit their older sister Nancy's bad luck.
He knows what he has to do. He wishes he didn't, because Will is up there on the stage, but he isn't going to watch his twelve-year old sister fight for survival.
He pushes Holly back.
"I volunteer!" he yells, and Holly, who realises what Mike is doing, tries to hold him back, but he shrugs her off and pushes himself through the crowd towards the stage. "I volunteer as tribute!"
OR: When Holly's name is called for the Hunger Games, Mike volunteers to take her place. As if it isn't bad enough, the second tribute for their district was none other than Will Byers, his childhood best friend turned enemy.
Mike is stressed. Will is anxious. And Nancy, their mentor, is struggling to stop herself from trapping them both in a cage and forcing them to sort out their feelings towards each other.

“Will, what are you saying? I- I mean, I know! I know you don’t like me, but what are you-“, Mike shivers, tears stinging in his eyes. He feels pathetic and he’s not sure how Will found out. Everything Mike had said before hadn’t even scratched the surface of what he feels for Will. How does he know?
Will rolls his eyes, getting up. “No, I don’t think you know, Mike. I would never, in a million years, touch you. I’m so appalled by you, by the fact that somehow, somewhere inside of you, you truly believe we should be together. It’s ridiculous, it’s disgusting.”
“Will-“, Mike croaks, standing and placing a hand on his shoulder, only to be shoved against the wall, hard. A clock chimes somewhere, again. Mike has heard it before, maybe a few days ago but he truly can’t remember. “Will, you don’t mean that. Come on, I’m sorry.”

After Will admitting that he likes guys, Mike is confronted with his own feelings that he has pushed down for the longest time. He gets Vecna'd and is forced to face the secrets he's been keeping, the feelings he has for his best friend. But how could he ever tell him?

“I’ve never made more sense than right now and we both know it.”, Mike whines, “If you want to kiss me and I want to kiss you, like, really fucking badly, then why won’t you just let me? Who cares if I’m drunk? I’ll remember it, trust me. And I’ll kiss you fifty more times tomorrow.”
“What if I want fifty-one kisses?”, Will hears himself respond, throat dry and, heck, did he leave on the heater?
“Then, you’ll get a hundred.”, Mike murmurs, slowly but firmly pressing his lips against Will’s jaw, “You’ll get as many as you want. And anywhere you want, for that matter.”

AU were mike comes home drunk, confessing he really, really wants, no, NEEDS to kiss will. the next morning, he doesn't even remember how he ended up in will's room and will is left to deal with the mess. HAPPY ENDING
