I don’t return the next day. Or the day after that. On the fourth day Haymitch, finding me behind a steam pipe, confronts me.
“When are you going to see him?” he says.
“I don’t know if I can… he hates me,” I say, muffled, my mouth pressed to my knees. “That’s not… Peeta anymore.” My voice sounds small and pitiful.
“He’s… confused and angry,” he says. “He doesn’t hate you, not really. He can’t tell the difference between what’s real and the memories the Capitol implanted.”
“He does hate me,” I say, stubbornly. “Snow did this to him to hurt me. He wasn’t a rebel, if it weren’t for me… ”
Haymitch sighs. “It doesn’t matter why Snow did it. This isn’t about you. The boy’s having trouble telling up from down, you can’t tell him you’ll be back, and then not come. It’s cruel.”
