— I surpassed him, Dazai-san.
Dazai said nothing.
— He was weak. Useless. You have to admit I’m better, — Akutagawa pressed on.
Dazai still didn’t look at the young man. Hazel eyes followed the direction Chūya had gone. A long, motionless silence stretched between them like a black gulf.
— Better? By what measure? — Dazai spoke at last. His voice was flat and colorless, as washed-out as the Yokohama sky.
Akutagawa blinked. Something in him shifted — slight, almost imperceptible.
— Because I’m stronger, — he barked, hard and sharp, as if a crack of sound could force Dazai to see him. — We fought. He’s gone. And I — I won.
Dazai turned his head at last. Slowly, as if each degree cost effort.
— I don’t see a victory here, — he said, the voice low and dull, as though traveling up through water. — You lost. You lost to the monster inside you. -

Summary
After the long battle against Fyodor, the agency needs to fulfill its promise to the Mafia: the transfer of one of its members.
What no one expected was that the member chosen by Mori Ougai would be none other than Nakajima Atsushi. No one knew the reason for this decision, but it had to be followed.
Atsushi was now Akutagawa Ryuunosuke's roommate, the man with whom he had fought throughout this war. He still detested him, of course, but why then did he intrigue him so much?
Nakajima had lost friends, dreams, and hopes. And now, he was trapped doing missions at the behest of his enemies, clinging to the expectation of being rescued. He never imagined that, with time, he would learn to tolerate that place and those people. Love? He didn't know. But he now had a perspective he didn't have before: They were all human.
And that applied to Akutagawa. How to explain what was growing between them? Love? He didn't know.
