The machine had once asked the Doctor: "What is a soul? Why do living beings give it such weight?"
And the Doctor had responded: "My grandfather once said that we exist as cosmic beings, who exist by creating their own unknowable form of Gravity. However, you cannot observe Gravity without inflicting Gravity upon it. When two forms of Gravity come into conflict, they pull on each other until one inevitably gives in. Only the burning wreckage is left behind, something warped and twisted beyond the breaking point. Something utterly unique, but at the same time, utterly worthless. That's what a soul is."
