    Summary

Jiang Cheng’s breath stuck in his throat. All he could see was Lan Wangji’s mouth, slightly parted in shock, and the scream of his name from someone behind him. Lan Wangji’s eyes flickered away from Jiang Cheng, and then his expression turned to horror. He staggered back a few steps, and it was like someone had cut Jiang Cheng’s strings. The thing holding him up was gone, and his legs struggled to remember how to hold him up.

Lan Wangji nearly fatally stabbing Jiang Cheng is both the tempest and the preceding storm.

    Summary

Shido is exactly the sort of person who assumes that he has the right to take out his petty feelings on everything else around him. Because the habit never got crushed out of him. Because nobody ever taught him to be smaller, to hide away, that this world is not his to participate in. Because nobody can stop him from doing it, now that he’s old and rich and in charge of people’s paychecks. Goro takes these moments for himself, files them away, keeps them sharp. He’d rather die than forget why he’s angry. He’s very glad that Shido makes such a career out of reminding Goro why he’s angry every minute of every day.

An object thrown at high speeds breaks upon hard contact, as inertia crushes it against the surface; an object coming to a delayed halt remains intact, as if nothing had really happened after all. Reality is like that. Tokyo, specifically, is like that. The removal of a playground leads to drug addiction in sixteen-year-olds four years later. Getting fired from a job means a single mother kills herself eighteen months from now. A paper penned by a nice man in a suit who gives his daughter ice cream on her birthday and roses to his wife on no particular occasion except love and money later leads to major defunding of an entire office, then renewal initiatives for an entire neighborhood, dozens of dozens of elderly families pushed out to live in cheaper and dirtier and uglier homes, until half of them catches colds from the mold in the walls spread by the defunding of some other government department spread by some other nice man in a suit’s paperwork, and bodies are removed from apartments in a slow trickle over the course of eight years.

    Summary

Could you eat respect, if you were hungry? Would respect keep you warm at night when you were freezing? If a sword were held to your throat, could respect block it?

When the laughter of your enemies filled your ears, could the respect of a single man let you ignore it? Did it really matter so much, to have someone see you as you truly were and to still decide you were worth something?

…yes. It seemed that it did.

(in which Meng Yao, who'd never met a single moral in his life, decides nevertheless to be a good person)

In that first moment before he turned, he’d thought he’d mistaken one sheath for another, an old habit – a memory of better times, even – because of course it couldn’t be true, there was no way for Nie MIngjue to be here, but despite all common sense he heard that familiar voice roar, “I will not!”

There was, Meng Yao reflected, a certain joy in all those thoughts of murdering his superior, a warm glow at the thought of getting the revenge he deserved by making the man pay in blood.

    Summary

Huaisang kept his thoughts off his face, maintaining the air of the harmless dandy he’d so carefully cultivated, the hidden ribbon coated in poison wrapped carefully around his wrist, not dangerous unless ingested and easily passed off as an accessory if spotted. It was an hour in when Huaisang’s target finally showed up with his delegation, confident and grinning in his spotless Jin robes, and Huaisang took a deep breath as he and Mingjue rose to greet him.

    Showtime.

“And you?” Huaisang had to ask, the worry nagging at him despite the satisfaction of a plan well executed, the terror at the one possibility he couldn’t one hundred percent plan against, “You weren’t hurt, right? He didn’t try to attack you too?” Mingjue’s breath hitched slightly, and his lips pressed together into a firm line. Huaisang didn’t have to fake the emotions that played openly across his face at his silence, the possibilities of a hidden injury whirling through his mind, his heart seizing even as his abused lungs protested the building panic.
