You rewind the message over and over. Your chin quivers. Eyes burn. Tears run in thin streaks down to your pillow. You sniffle, rewind the message, and hold your phone to your ear again.
'I'm so proud of you, sweetie.'
You don't remember the last time somebody said that to you. Can't remember a time when they actually meant it when they did. And even though it's just a voice message, you can tell Sylus means it. There's an earnest note to his tone. The weight of real pride in his words. You bite back a sob and rewind it once more.

Zayne glares at Sylus. "What are you doing?" he hisses.
Sylus has the audacity to pull that smug grin on him, at the same time he pulls the blankets down Zayne's body, slips his hands under his pajama shirt to feel the lean muscle of his stomach. "You're having trouble sleeping - I want to help. It's as simple as that."
Zayne looks pointedly over at you, only a couple feet away, back facing him. You're fast asleep and completely oblivious to what's happening on the other side of the bed. "We could wake them up-"
"And?" Sylus leans down, eyes still locked on the doctor, to kiss just above his naval. "They can join in if they need a sleep aid."

You know exactly what you'll find there, and you know nothing could possibly hurt you here. And yet, perfectly safe behind dozens of security measures, you bleed.
That's what really wakes you up; the wet, slick feeling between your legs. Your heart drops into your stomach with a resounding thunk. Already, you know it's too late. You know Aunt Flo got the drop on you this time.

Summary
Blips, boops, and bopping music sound softly through the living room. Pixelated characters hop around the TV screen, one more confidently than the other, solving puzzles together. The clicking of buttons follows their movements.
Zayne shushes his daughter once again when she squeals in glee at getting to the next level. "We need to keep it down, sweetheart, remember?"
She gasps, looking back at him with wide eyes. "Oh no, I forgot!" she tries to whisper. He's useless to stop her when she looks up to the ceiling and shouts, "I'm sorry! I'll be quiet now!"
He smiles. He has no doubts that woke his partner up, though he's sure Sylus won't mind. Not really. Not if it's their little girl doing the waking.
