Summary
In the short time Xia Fei had known him, he’d watched Liu Xiao play countless levels of Tetris and Solitaire and Sudoku on his phone. This was just another game, seeing how far he could push Xia Fei’s boundaries before he gave in, or told him off, or quit the job altogether. He could see it in the way Liu Xiao watched him, careful and intent like he was just another puzzle piece that hadn’t fallen into place yet.
Unfortunately, Xia Fei had always been an incredible overachiever.

Summary
Liu Xiao holds the match between his fingers with less delicate care than he holds his microphone onstage. Li Tianchen frowns, blurts out before he can ask, “you taking up smoking, or?”
The artificially-fake smile on Liu Xiao’s face would make anyone else think they’ve upset him, but Li Tianchen knows Liu Xiao well, knows his strangeness and odd intensity and pretentiousness the way knowing someone for a very long time settles into your bones. So, he doesn’t think Liu Xiao is mad, but he can tell Liu Xiao is judging him when he says, “it’s in bad form to adopt bad habits that drive the fans away.”
“Yeah, because the gambling isn’t a bad habit,” Li Tianchen mutters, but he keeps his eyes on the bright-orange flame.

“What are you always so stressed for, little one?” Vein asks.
Liu Xiao stills for a moment. Blinks once, twice. Tilts his head and says with a laugh, “I’m not sure what you mean,” but there’s an edge that wasn’t there a second ago. Calm. He reels himself back in, reins in the off-kilter smile. Trust Vein to mess up even this. He’s always been particularly difficult to leash.
A gun at his throat, copper in his mouth, and intertwining threads unraveling.

Vein kisses him the same way that he slings an arm around his shoulder and the same way he reaches out to hit him in a spar, to press on a bruise: easy and not with romance, but as if grounding something wandering away. As if filling something cold and empty up with dry kindling and a spark. Liu Xiao leans into each touch identically.
