    Bookmarker's Notes

Do you think it actually matters to me or anyone else if Barrett did or didn’t mean it? Do you think him not meaning it makes him saying it any less offensive? Barrett’s a fuckin’ coward and if you’re going to keep calling him your friend, then that’s it for us, Ilya. I’m not some goddamn saint like Hollander must be, because this is my line in the sand.”

"Hockey talent or not, for the rest of his life, the onus will always be on him to dodge this bullshit and come out squeaky clean on the other side. The strict rules binding him simply don’t exist for other people."

A few months into his first season with the Centaurs, Shane is rapidly approaching a breaking point for reasons nobody would ever guess, and he himself is only beginning to understand.

    Notes:

    Now we're getting somewhere!

In the next chapter they'll talk for real, and the stage will be set for positive change.

Also, I know it's probably low-hanging fruit for Wyatt to be the universal allyship king, but there's some exposition that I couldn't fit into the actual story. Just before he was traded, there was an incident at the hospital in Toronto where Lisa worked, where prejudiced healthcare workers in another department neglected a patient, ultimately resulting in their death. It made national news, and the whole staff went through anti-racism training. Lisa came home totally shaken because she realized just how much white privilege had influenced every aspect of her life, was horrified that implicit bias might be affecting the care she provided, and bought every book on the trainer's recommended reading list. And, well, Wyatt figured he could only benefit from reading them with her. Early in his first season with Ottawa, he overheard a reporter ask Bood about some random Trinidadian businessman being accused of tax fraud, asked Bood quietly if he'd mind if Wyatt took that one, and Wyatt proceeded to question why the reporter didn't also ask about two much higher-profile figures who were a) also on trial for tax fraud and b) white. The reporter stood there with his mouth gaping open like a fish, Wyatt said, "That's what I thought," and Bood invited him over for burgers and video games on the spot. They've been besties ever since

    Faith affirming.

"The crown suits you, you know," said Ser Duncan over the cacophony, bringing Baelor back to himself. "Makes you look... you know. Kingly. Which I suppose makes sense, seeing as how you're the king now." A look of anguish crossed his face. "Oh, hells, I shouldn't be calling you 'you,' should I? It's 'Your Grace.' Please don't take—"

Baelor resisted the urge to rest his hand against the lad's back, as one might soothe a skittish horse. "No offense was taken, ser."

"Thank you," Ser Duncan said, then immediately amended, "thank Your Grace...ness. Seven fucks, I'm getting another drink." And he whirled away into the throng before Baelor could say a word.

    Summary

“Shane Hollander,” Rozanov says in his deep, thick accent.

“Rozanov,” Hollander nods. His voice cracks embarrassingly so he keeps talking, hoping the other man won’t notice. “Just came up here to get some air. I didn’t see a sign saying not to so I think we’re allowed. It’s chilly, eh? But a beautiful view,” he rambles.

“Ah yes,” Rozanov says flatly. “London, Ontario. Famous view.”

Shane can’t tell whether he’s being sarcastic. He probably is. He’s kind of an asshole, Shane thinks to himself, not for the first time. But an asshole who makes Shane’s stomach do weird things. Things that he wants to experience again so that he can properly label them. For science.

    OR

What if last year's Hockey Canada sexual assault trial happened in the Heated Rivalry universe, not with the 2018 gold medal team but with Shane Hollander's 2009 team? A nearly decade-long situationship with consent king Ilya Rozanov makes the Hollander who walks into the courtroom in 2017 a very different man from the boy who ran out of the hotel room all those years ago.

    Bookmarker's Notes

“What happened that night was fucked, Mom. I’m sorry to swear but it’s true. And stuff like that happens all the time, you don’t even know! You talk about these things like women are just liars who are going after innocent men, but these men aren’t fucking innocent! Most of the guys in hockey, even on my team… shit is really bad. Way worse than even the news makes it seem. Worse than you can imagine.”

Yuna stops walking and looks at him. Really looks at him. His gaze drops to the pavement beneath their feet, he doesn’t want to make eye contact. He wonders if he said too much. If he should have let her continue being delusional, continue seeing her beloved sport through rose-coloured glasses, a lifetime spent on the sideline and never in the rooms where violence was laughed about and people –women– like her were assaulted, abused, silenced, and forgotten about.

She takes a deep breath. There’s a glimmer of tears in the corner of her eyes. “I think I’ve spent so much time trying to support you to get into those rooms that I was never allowed in, that I never stopped to think that… that maybe things in those rooms weren’t so good.”

“He didn’t mean it in a judgemental way, it’s not that he assumes you’re a terrible person. But he and I have had a number of conversations since then and, well, you know your dad. Still waters run deep. Like you.” She reaches up and touches his face. “Even though things have come a long way since he was playing at McGill in the 80s, hockey is hockey and he says some things never change. The way men in hockey talk about women hasn’t changed. It’s quieter now, probably. People have the media training and good sense to not be so vocal about their beliefs. But, as you say, in locker rooms and places where they think they won’t be overheard… well. It’s been quite the learning journey for me, to listen to your dad’s old stories.”

“I can get in touch with the advocates from the trial, unofficially of course and without using my name, but we do want to make sure that whatever we do feels supportive for the young woman, she’s been through enough.” Yuna says this matter-of-factly as though she’s always been a fierce survivor advocate and did not used to say horrible things about golddigging girls. “And Farah is a godsend, getting things finalized with Ottawa so quickly. Did she tell Montreal about the texts in order to get leverage?”

    Summary

“My dearest Fanny!” William Price burst forth. “You will not believe it! I am to be a lieutenant. My friend Captain Linton has spoken for me. As soon as he is to have a ship I am to be his lieutenant!”

It was impossible that Fanny’s spirits should be as high as his, but her felicity might well have surpassed his. She listened to him with tears of joy in her eyes and could not express her pride in his accomplishments nor her gratitude for this long-awaited promotion in terms warm enough to suit her feelings.

William was jubilant. To Captain Marshall he had been a favourite in the way only a steady, dependable midshipman could be, but to Captain Linton he was a friend. Now at last he would be in the way to make his fortune. Never in his life had he felt such triumphant satisfaction and if only he would be granted an opportunity to introduce the Captain to his sister before they returned to sea, he would have nothing to wish for.
