Lo’ak’s breath comes in ragged gasps. “My legs—” he says, and the sound of it is small; it is an aching horror. “I can’t feel my legs.”
The sentence hits Jake like a physical blow.
A phantom ache at the base of his spine flares hot and immediate, bright enough to steal his breath. For a second he is no longer in the marui, no longer on Pandora, no longer blue-skinned and capable and a father.

“Lo’ak slow down.”
Neteyam’s voice comes from behind him, already tired.“I am slow,” Lo’ak lies, darting between roots anyway. He laughs when his foot catches and he nearly eats dirt.
Neteyam grabs his arm before he can fall. Reflexive. Sure.
“Eywa,” Neteyam mutters. “You’re gonna break your neck one day.”
Lo’ak beams up at him. “You always catch me.”

Summary
Lo’ak is shuddering hard with each breath. His lips are pulled back, teeth bared a little. Grey around the mouth. Eyes open but not really seeing anything. But Jake can see Lo’ak’s chest going up and down in big pulls, and all he feels is relief. For a second, that’s all that matters. His son is breathing and alive. But the relief, however strong, bleeds out, and all he's left with is dread because something is very, very wrong.
Or
Lo'ak walks to a beach with his dad's rifle. Jake finds out.

Summary
Jake was tired; it was always the same, it was always Lo'ak.
In a brutal fight, his son tries to leave in the middle of the argument. Rage consumes him, and blinded by fury, cruel words escape Jake's lips.
"If you walk out that entrance... don't come back."
Everything seemed to stop at that moment.
Tears roll down his son's face. Lo'ak, devastated, walks away.
And Jake's life falls apart.
If Jake had known, if he had known that everything would end like this... he never would have let his son walk out that entrance.
He never would have opened his mouth to begin with.
Now Jake must face the horror of his words.
Words that might be the last thing his son remembers of him.
If only he had truly seen Lo'ak... if only love had arrived before pride...
His son would be here with him.
But Jake does not lose faith that one day he will find him.
