Summary
A little psychoanalytic lit crit on the character of Giles, and particularly on how the writers built the dark side of his characterization through his actions toward Spike and Buffy.

Bookmarker's Notes
Alec plans to seduce Normal to secure his job perks. Instead, they both end up getting what they really want. I loved this subtle, adult story, and especially the way it stubbornly refused to cave to cliche.
Potential story spoilers below:
This story is an unusual gen fic that is set in a sexually charged atmosphere. Normal is clearly attracted to Alec, but he is also clear about not wanting to have sex with him. Alec employs various moves to seduce Normal, but also is clear about his own motives, which don't include wanting to have sex with him. Instead, something genuine and beautiful forms between them. Neither is pining or harboring unrequited lust. The UST is between the slash reader, with our trained story expectations, and the story itself. It also exists in the eye of the beholder/society, represented in the story by Max, who refuses to believe that this could be about anything other than sex: there is no third possibility. And yet, the story persists in showing, rather beautifully, how that third possibility might work - and making the reader wish for more of it. It's a rare gem.

Bookmarker's Notes
A dark little AU, with Raylan in very different circumstances but the same magnetic pull between him and Boyd. Great Boyd pov and this author's usual great characterizations all around. The author knows how to leave you wanting more.

Summary
“I called Raylan,” Boyd Crowder said, looking at him with unblinking eyes, like one of those fish that trawled along the ocean floor where there was no light at all. “Well,” Tim said back, “Raylan ain’t here.”

Bookmarker's Notes
Tim pov, beautiful writing, philosophical. Tim muses on the nature of man and the stories we tell to understand and shape our own lives, as he observes Boyd and himself.

Summary
Jeffy Cliff never met Raylan Givens before the day he killed him, so he didn't know enough to be scared when Boyd Crowder showed up at his doorstep about a month later, smiling all friendly-like, and wanting to come inside.

Summary
“What happened?” Raylan asks.
“Whaddya mean?” Boyd slurs, reaching up to swat aimlessly at Raylan’s face. Raylan studies him, his dilated pupils, the lax expression on his face, his purposeless hands. He feels all over Boyd’s scalp for bumps, bruises or blood, but doesn’t find anything. He thinks back to the two glasses on the bar, the bloodied bottle on the floor.
“Did he put something in your drink?” Raylan asks, his voice so tight it shakes.
Boyd’s eyes focus on Raylan’s face and he grins, a big dopey smile on his bloodstained face. “Raylan Givens,” he says with satisfaction. “You here to lock me up?”
*
In which Raylan's instincts take the wheel, and Boyd is a damsel in distress.

Bookmarker's Notes
Fantastic voices, understated hurt/comfort, sexy without being explicit, strong writing, great capture of these two characters. Cinematic storytelling, with effective rendering of these taciturn characters' gestures and body language.
