Summary
His hands were shaking. He was so scared to move.
The people in the car were freaking out. There was shouting, screaming, crying. People were moving frantically, looking around, digging under seats, trying to find the bomb. The small girl across from Kai was being hugged by her crying mother, but the girl looked far less scared. She was looking right at Kai, overflowing trust in her eyes, smiling, knowing that he was there.
“It’s…It’s gonna be okay,” Kai told her. He managed a smile, barely moving.
“I know,” the girl said. “My mom says you always win, so I don’t have to be scared.”
“Yeah. Your mom’s pretty smart.”

Or, Kai wakes up in a drugged haze to find himself on a crowded train that he didn't remember boarding, with a bomb strapped to his chest. Over the announcements, those on the train are given an ultimatum—kill the person wearing the vest, or the bomb goes off, killing them all. Kai, separated from his team, is faced with the same choice. Meanwhile, the Ninja race to shut it all down before the timer counts down to zero.

"Oh, no, here is fine, let me just—" Arin straightens, rolling his shoulder a bit, and then returns to his position more carefully. "It's just these, um, bandages, you know? Restricts my movement a little. Hurts when they're being tugged."
She hums, frowning, and lets Arin find his comfortable spot before settling in herself. "…Do you want me to kiss it better?" She asks, and Arin huffs from her side.
"I don't think that'll work anymore, Mom." Arin protests, weakly.

“Kai,” Jay says, voice thin, unfamiliar.
Kai just hums again, unbothered. He truly does seem so unbothered, but not numb in the way the agents at the Administration were beaten into. He's like the running air of the sweet east coast that Jay swallowed greedily upon his first escape from the stuffy desks of the Administration. He was lucky, he knew, to be a manager. He had a little more free time and his leash was longer, and his mandated area of housing was bigger than the dormitories for interns. He was lucky, he knew, but he didn't feel like he was.
And the words he says next, he’ll blame on exhaustion, on tiredness, on isolation and the hunger that beats at him and crawls up his windpipe. “Am I too far gone?”
In which Kai and Jay have a haircutting session.

"I miss it, sometimes." Cole says, quietly, as though he needs to explain.
Jay turns to look at Cole, and finds that he isn't looking back. "The water?" He asks.
"The rain, specifically. I always liked it."
Jay nods in soft, aching, understanding. "I get it." He whispers, carefully trying to trace Cole's face with his eyes, trying to hold onto a specific detail before it slips through his fingers, before it loses it's form.
"I know you do."
or: Jay and Cole have a small conversation on a rainy night. Cole's slipping, and Jay's breaking. They can't quite reach each other.

Summary
Kai suddenly grabs his bag and phone, leaving his drink on the table, as he quickly leaves out the back door, pulling up Jay’s contact and calling him back. He walks outside, moving past a handful of dumpsters and arrives at a more isolated spot, usually where he’d go to smoke.
He waits rather impatiently, internally cursing himself each second that Jay doesn’t pick up. This is stupid, he thinks, but waits nonetheless.
Jay answers.
or: after zane's death, kai accidentally saves jay's life.
