There's a shooting in the school. An expelled student had died, and Max had been in the bathroom when it happened. They'd been friends, Kate learns. Suddenly, her own problems, pain, fears, loneliness... they seem so insignificant. She'd brought it on herself, after all. Max hadn't asked to lose a friend.
Kate hugs Alice close to her chest as she crosses the dorm hallway, pausing in front of Max's door. She's tired. Her chest aches, sore from days of stifled sobs. But she raises a hand and quietly raps her knuckles beside the little whiteboard. Max isn't a person of faith; she won't find rest with Him. And that's okay. Maybe she can find it with someone else.

Summary
When the Tahw first visited the M314 solar system, they found potential sentient life on the third planet. That was millennia ago (well, by our timeframe) so it was about time for a recon mission. The Tahw are a plant-like species that function as a herd, so to find an intelligent predatory animal like the PIS1 on M314-P3 is particularly intriguing! Can an ecosystem even survive that? Or have they meanwhile eradicated themselves, like all the other sentient predators that they had encountered on previous missions?
As the Tahw mission team around matriarch T’hem advance further into the foreign solar system, and discover several non-natural objects on the way, they slowly learn that the PIS1 species has not only survived, but has advanced to an early space-exploration stage of development. What implications does that have? Is a first contact inevitable? Can they be won over as allies, or is their aggressive, territorial instinct stronger than intelligence and scientific curiosity? How do you even talk to a predator? And what shape will the planet be in when they arrive? They can only speculate...OR
The answer to the question: If aliens visited us now, what would they think of us?

Her and Nate were both discharged after the victory of Anchorage, and returned home war heroes. Nate was officially issued his Silver Star right in front of the Museum of Freedom, the hometown hero welcomed with cheers. It was everything those recruitment posters had promised. She had hated it. Off the public records she had been issued her own awards, and she would throw those away in a hearbeat if it took the memories away. Her service would never be public knowledge, which suited her just fine. Nate never quite understood her willingness to let her own awards be a secret.
Nora's journey through the wasteland, with my own spin on it. Mature rating mostly for language, but there is a fair bit of violence as well. I mean it is called the Wasteland.
