The attack on the Northern Water Tribe goes differently, Aang and the ocean spirit don’t destroy the entire Fire Nation fleet, only most of them.
Zhao escapes, taking Sokka and a few other Water Tribe men as prisoners. Knowing Sokka is traveling with the Avatar he gets sent to Zhao’s “special prison camp” that is hidden near the Earth Kingdom colonies.
Sokka gets a taste of the real war, not the war that he thinks he knows from traveling with the Avatar. While Zhao’s prisoner, he struggles to survive the inhuman conditions. Alone and thought to be dead, he feels himself slowly losing hope.
Seeing a familiar face brings back his hope, even if that face is the scarred Prince of the Fire Nation.
Sokka and Zuko come together to survive and end up depending on each other for a lot more than they ever thought possible.

Having finally reached the sea, the Scouts found themselves in a bit of a lull. They would have to prepare extensively for further expeditions, and that took time. Stationed at the wharf, the remaining scouts had the opportunity to unwind and make memories together. Armin gets to explore his passion for the sea, and finds a shared interest with someone he hadn't expected as Jean begins to join him in his study of the shore.

Jean and Armin are captured by a Marleyan squadron under suspicion of Restorationist activity. They each endure a different form of torture and are changed forever by this short, traumatic event. It forces their friendship to evolve, their behavior to incite concern from their team, and for them to realize that if they're going to come away from this shared experience, they'll need to do so together.
Jearmin fans: you barely even need to squint for this to be pre-slash. I love intimate friendships and that's how I've written this.

On the rainy autumn days when he insisted on accompanying her during her restless searches through the bustling streets and abandoned lots of Liberio. And on stormy winter nights when he’d have no choice but to physically hold her back from heedlessly marching off into the blizzard and held her against him instead as soft sobs racked her shoulders. Months had gone by and somewhere along, he lost count of the mornings, afternoons and midnights he took upon himself, spending his days on the lookout for any trace of their missing friend so she could get some rest at least.
All of which could‘ve been prevented had Eren simply not taken off without a word and left everyone in the dark.

Jean-Centric. Jean Kirstein's father goes to reclaim Wall Maria in Shinganshina, leaving his only child to take over as the man of the house. The idea sticks with Jean all the way up to his training days in the military. He was a jaded, asshole of a teen who took the militant lifestyle to heart and tried to be strong. Even when the training days grew heavy and tiresome, he put on a façade. His bunkmate, Marco Bott, can see right through him though, making his tough guy act harder to keep up. Marco knows just what he needs.
