    [SPOILERS THROUGH C4E4.]

“Honor is not just a word,” Julien retorts.

Occtis is too tired not to scoff in his face. “It’s just a word, and it’s a fickle one. Never trust a silent ‘h.’”

Julien’s brow furrows as he processes this, and his look of incredulity only increases. “So your family wants you back, and now—”

“My family wanted an undead thrall,” Occtis snaps. “They got half that. When Bolaire and Dr. Mag’Nesson took the stone out of my chest, the process that had started couldn’t finish. Now I’m stuck with the same problem I had before all this: I have to figure all of this out for myself!” Overtaken by a sudden fit of anger, he jabs his finger into Julien’s chest. “You of all people should relate!”

Rage flares to life in Julien’s expression, and he presses forward, making his superior height and build evident. “You are going to stop right there,” he snarls.

    Summary

From his post, Viktor had a perfect view of him, ever studious and ever handsome, so young. Anyone with eyes and an interest in men would find Jayce interesting to watch across the room, he often told himself. Viktor was no stranger to attraction, but his proclivity for alone time had relegated him to a few trysts over the years, largely physical, never lasting. Just enough to scratch the itch.

Watching Jayce was scratching an itch.

Catching his eye across the room and smiling like they had a secret was scratching an itch.

But Viktor wasn’t delusional. With all of Paris at Jayce’s fingertips, it would be ill-advised and unthinkable for him to settle for a banged-up, old librarian.

    ---
Paris, 1976. University librarian Viktor can understand why he has a crush on a new, foreign grad student. He cannot understand why that student wants to be his friend.

    Summary

“Haven’t you learned, Defender?” He grabs Jayce’s jaw with cold metal fingers, “There’s no honor in war. Only death.”

Jayce takes in one gasping breath, gathers it, then spits into the Machine Herald’s face.

How’s that for honorable, he adds silently.

Viktor and Jayce are deadly agents on opposite sides of the war. Amidst their attempts to stay alive and bring victory to their homelands they encounter each other instead.

    Summary

    "Jayce?"

This time, his voice is effective. Weary but exponentially warm golden-brown eyes flit up from the mess of gears and screws Jayce is carefully accounting for, a scar-nicked brow turns up in wholesome attentiveness as he tunes in to his companion's query.

"Hm?" Comes a still partly-distracted response.

Viktor makes a little sound partway between an exhale and a chuckle.

"I said," He begins again. "I believe that I ran into an old colleague of yours this morning."

    Or,

Jayce struggles to deal with an old headache. An old headache that might just want to sleep with his lab partner.

    Summary

Viktor knew how he looked. With his sharp angles and hollowed cheeks and colt-like limbs, he was a serpentine god with all his alabaster beauty.

The nobles whispered about it. The investors watched Viktor move, fascination warring with discomfort. The Council scoffed at the idea of a Zaunite on their board—until they saw him.

Exotic. Enthralling. An exquisite thing to be coveted for themselves.

    Viktor had once despised it.

Despised the way they stared, the way their fascination was always tinged with something possessive, as if he were a rare specimen on display. Loathed the murmurs in the Academy halls, the furtive glances that dogged him everywhere he went.

    Now?

    Now, he used it.

If they should lust after him, they did so at their own peril.

Desire was a fundamental human weakness. A distraction. A vulnerability. And if Jayce Talis was to prove useful, then Viktor would use every weakness he had.
