Summary
Nothing matters except for the rainbow pearlescence of the spyder's scanner, the pain in John's eye, the starvation growing with every moment. Maybe this is the rest of his life, maybe this moment will go on forever, maybe the transplant didn’t work and the entirety of Precrime will be brought down on his head. He tries to take slow, even breaths, even though they're useless. Even though everything's useless.
Footsteps. The door banging open, and then silence. He moves his head, as if to see who it is, as if he can see at all, and electricity arcs up his arm. He’s dead, he’s decided, already shot and bleeding out. Some Precrime officer who’s trigger-happy. That’s alright. He’s accepted it, maybe, or maybe it’s the delirious pain of his eye and the hunger for blood and the remnants of the drug in his system.
“Do it,” he says. “Shoot me.”
“Jesus Christ, Anderton.” It’s not any of his officers, and the man’s heartbeat is pounding in his chest, and it takes him a moment for him to pull it all together. And then slowly, incredulously—
“Witwer?”

Summary
This is a story where Credence and Percival are soulmates, but neither one knows it.
****
Credence is ten when Mary Lou first starts beating him with his belt, raining blows down across his back and thighs. One day, when Credence is waiting for the blows to begin, May-Lou hesitates. She stands with her arm half raised, still holding the belt, poised to strike. Slowly, she reaches her other hand forward, gently brushing her fingers across the space between the boy’s shoulders. Credence revels in the soft touch, drinking in the kindness, hope blossoming in his chest.
Until the tender fingers turn to claws, digging into the smooth flesh of his back.
“Invert.” Mary Lou spits the word out like it is poison, her nails unforgiving and cutting deep into him, but not nearly as deep as her words. “The name of a man embedded in your very skin! Have you no shame, boy? Parading your whorishness in the house of God!”
Later, when Mary Lou as quenched her thirst for blood, and Credence is back in his bed, he can’t help running his fingers across the place of his damning mark.
