Summary
“Yeah, well consider it festered,” he spits out. “It isn’t something I can do so easily.”
“What isn’t?”
“The waiting. The waiting around,” he answers, and even he can hear the frustrated tone of his voice. He thinks he is probably not entitled to it, considering that this conversation is a cancerous growth from the desire that he can’t let go of. “I cannot just sit quietly for the next time you want me. There’s no time in the day for that.” There’s hardly time now. The fucking title hangs in the balance, and Daniel comes to him wanting to talk now.

Summary
Bill,
Thanks for your letter of January 31st detailing your loss of the Thunderbird Invitational. I hope you know that I don’t keep up with that kind of thing, and you could’ve just as easily have told me that you took home the whole damn prize. I guess I should thank you for your honesty, shouldn’t I?
All is well here, thanks for asking. I really am sorry that I’m not able to come to more reunions, but New York is a long way to travel even to visit with nice people. Maybe I’ll get up there someday, but I’ll bet that you salty bastards must get up to enough excitement without me there. Tell the fellas I say hello the next time it rolls around.
If you’re still in California, my wife and I would be happy to host you at our home here on the outskirts of Los Angeles. We’re still at the same address we were when we were married back in ‘49. (Some four years ago, now. Can you believe it?) So, swing (haha) by if you want to. Ring if you decide to come or Alma will bite my head off. My extension is enclosed, and it hasn’t changed either, as you know.
Faithfully yours,
Jay

Summary
In an instant, he remembers seeing her marching behind her father down the streets of Aldbourne, every bit as serious and severe as a ranking officer. It would be difficult to forget that harsh, determined look (trained only on the next step forward and the next) on an otherwise gentle, round face framed by dark curls.
That look is trained on him now, her green eyes are a shock to the rest of her, sharp and intelligent. They seem to dig into him almost instantly.

Summary
Lewis Nixon has been on his last nerve, but he knows better than to fill up a whole sheet of paper with how much he dislikes somebody. Not pleasant to write about and certainly not pleasant to read. He has this latent desire to make his accounts something that DeEtta likes to get beyond the simple joy of receiving word from a friend. They deserve to have some kind of entertainment value.
All the same, he walks across the Fort Benning fields in the newfound heat of April to the post office and lets himself just think for a second what he might say to DeEtta if he wasn’t worried about being a bother.

Summary
“Oh, you don’t have to worry about me on that front,” he promises her, believing it fully to be the truth.
Nevertheless, she seems unconvinced. “Don’t I?” she says, leaning in as though whispering a secret to him. She has a clean scent to her: lemon, linens, and eucalyptus.
“For starts, you don’t know me,” Rosie tells her, and though his mind wills him to pull back, the body is weak. Even in Texas, February is cold, and he can feel her warmth from where he stands.
There is an extended moment, torturous honestly, in which neither of them move. In which she just stares at him as though their strangeness to each other wasn’t a factor she’d considered before. Or maybe that’s a thought from his own mind and the drinks are confusing him. Either way, she grins once more, and only then does Rosie realize that up until this point he had been seeing behind a curtain that has suddenly snapped closed on him.

Summary
The figure crouches down, and it’s easier to see him now. His blue-gray eyes hold the beginnings of amusement, if that counts for anything. Said sunlight is making his red hair light up all golden-like. The name tag on his uniform reads “Winters” which is almost an irony. “You look a little worse for wear, soldier,” Winters says.
It takes Lew a minute to find himself. “Yeah?” he answers finally. “Well, you look—”
But however Winters looks, he is not to know. Rather than finish his sentence, Lew rolls over onto his side and loses that second half of his lunch. Puking is an activity he’s friendlier with than he’d like to be, he’s very familiar with the territory. It’s been a long time, however, since he’s had a hand on his back, patting him through the worst of it.
***

Summary
He’s not quite looking him in the eye, moreso around the chin, but he speaks up, nevertheless. “You look different than I thought you would.”
Lifting a brow, Dick presses, “What is that supposed to mean?”
“Well,” Nix huffs after a moment’s thought and taps the razor kit that’s sitting just on the edge of the foxhole. “You’re not half so fuzzy as the majority of the fellas are. Don’t tell me you’ve been shaving all the way out here?”
Dick glances between Nix and the razor kit and Nix again. “Well,” he sighs. “Yes.”
Nix huffs an incredulous laugh. “In this climate? What sort of person does that?” he mutters.
“I guess a veritable Tin Man,” Dick jokes, but he can’t quite get Nix to crack another smile.
***
Or, the shot in Holland hits Nix where it counts, and his return from the hospital is not what Dick had hoped for. -

Summary
It’s late at night when Bob stops them both in their tracks in the middle of the road between their houses, staring at the porchlight from the Keller residence as though it’s some enemy he has to face in order to survive. He gets like this sometimes, she has had to learn as much over the past few months of their courtship. It’s some potent blend of fierce thoughtfulness and grim determination that (as morbid as the thought is) makes her want to break open his skull and take a look inside.

Or Bob and Vera learn how things will be after the war -

Summary
He takes a sip of his coffee to accentuate his point but won’t look him fully in the eye. “Well, I guess you might as well have it out,” he says after a beat.
“What do you mean?”
“You ain’t come here to make friendly,” he says. “You can say your piece and leave.”
Gene folds his arms over his chest and leans against the doorframe. “Is that so?”
“It’s as so as the sun in the sky,” he says, and Gene watches him stand to dump his coffee out in the sink. He glances at him from the corner of his eye. “Don’t suppose you came in just lookin’ for a cup of coffee?”
“No,” he says. “No, I… This all came up because I’m graduating from ‘Bama Poly in the spring, and it’s time I set my house in order. Same as everybody else does. That’s why I’m here.”

Summary
“Sometimes, I wish so desperately that I could love you,” he tells her, closing his eyes as he settles deeper into his pillow. Another night that he will sleep in her bed, it would seem.
Helaena hums. “I suppose there are some wishes that not even kings are granted,” she says, folding her hands over her stomach. Is there another child growing there now? She can almost sense a certain beginning, though its source could not be determined even should she wish it.

Summary
“Our Lady Rhea Royce’s sudden death on the heel of Queen Aemma’s is…” Here the king pauses before finding himself once again. “It is a most unfortunate and unexpected loss. Furthermore, it leaves a place in our family to be filled.”
Despite her very best intentions, she glances at Daemon from the corner of her eye and finds his own gaze has shifted to Viserys. He stares at him as though the whole affair is a joke and taps his fingers restlessly on the table.
“Thus,” Viserys continues, “it is incumbent on us to betroth the Princess Rhaenyra to our brother Prince Daemon.”
She prides herself that she keeps still, though it is all she seems capable of, in truth. A ringing has begun in her ears. This was the expected end, was it not? Even for all of Hightower’s promises that it would not come to pass, she knew Daemon better. If this was truly his aim, none could have kept him from hitting the mark.
***
Or Viserys arranges Daemon and Rhaenyra's marriage, and neither of them are pleased at being told what to do. -

Summary
Cas looks up at him with wide, watery eyes and a scowl that makes Dean want to crush him to his chest until they both suffocate. Instead, he crouches down in front of Cas and looks him square in the eye. The stubborn bastard looks right back. After years of the same goddamn staring contest, it isn’t hard to figure out that Dean is always going to be the first one to break.
“I could hitchhike to Cozad,” he suggests. “Bring you back an ambulance.”
But Cas only shakes his head and grips the sleeve of Dean’s shirt like he’s trying to keep him in place. “House,” he insists. His breath seems to be slowly dissipating until there’s only enough left for one word at a time. “Faster."
Another moment passes as Dean looks over his shoulder down the long stretch of road as if just staring into the middle distance will make something happen. A car will appear or something. Some kind of quick fix that wouldn’t mean a roll of the dice with Cas’s life.
No such luck. Maybe Cas is right. Maybe time and rest are all they need.

Summary
When he was little, he used to watch the forests lining the highways and wonder how deep they went. Used to imagine how many people might be lost and buried in every mile they passed.
It’s not that he never imagined that he could be one of them one day; he just figured he might be older than sixteen before joining the ranks.
