Stede and Ed shoot the shit after an anticlimactic raid - and get a bit vulnerable.
Stede shifted in his seat and adjusted his arm around Ed’s shoulders, claiming an uncomfortable sitting position (“splinters in my ass—“), and settled up against Ed’s side. He couldn’t be certain whether Stede had intended to sit so close to him—probably doesn’t even notice, he presumed—but nonetheless he was elated. And it was probably just the moving around that had raised Stede’s heart rate, he’d concluded.
Except that after thirty seconds, he could still feel Stede’s heart beating against the back of his rib cage.“You alright, man?” Blackbeard asked, breaking the thick silence.
“‘Course, why do you ask?” Stede looked nervous.
“Heart's beating pretty hard over there,” he explained.
“…Is it?” Stede swallowed audibly. “Must be my blood pressure… Roach is pretty liberal with the salt.”
“Really? I thought dinner was rather bland, myself. Coulda used more salt, in fact.”
As Stede tried to think of a believable response, Blackbeard’s inner voice shouted at him.

Summary
That was the real trouble, wasn’t it? Letting Stede run him through with a sword had been nothing, in the end. He’d survived dozens of near-fatal wounds. It was exposing his soul to Stede that had finally done him in.
Ed has retreated far into his grief, and he's gotten rid of everyone--and everything--that reminds him of Stede. Then, one morning, a dinghy shows up at the Revenge.

Summary
Stede is an English Naval Captain who is tasked with bringing the legendary pirate Blackbeard to justice once and for all. Ed and Stede meet in the ensuing battle, and Ed brings the mortally-injured Stede back to his ship to save his life. When Stede finally awakes and discovers that most of his crew didn't survive, he's devastated and enraged at Blackbeard. Ed's fascination with Stede only grows over the following days. He wants Stede to like him, so he decides to pretend he's just "Ed," a member of Blackbeard's crew, keeping his true identity secret.
