Summary
Before this entire miserable year on the wrong side of the Atlantic started, Viktor thought she knew what her people look like.
Scientist, on the whole, are a pale, skinny bunch, prone to vitamin deficiencies and questionable haircuts. As a rule, they cannot throw or catch balls. The ones that do have social skills – and that’s a minority in and of itself – tend to exercise them mainly during board game nights. Scientists do not dance, they do not play team sports, and they do not tan. She fits right in, she supposes.
But here is Jayce Talis. And when she runs, it is not in a shuffling way. Viktor would know: she watches the woman jog from her window, though she’d rather die than admit to this behaviour.
The cause, Viktor decides after two weeks of shameful, absurd, undignified window-staring, must be something uniquely American. There is no other explanation for it.

Summary
Rhaenyra’s chuckle is thin, reedy. Her next kiss against Alicent’s hair has something desperate. There’s a thread between them, close to snapping.
Alicent, who is a problem-solver and also (still fascinating, that) the brave one between them, raises her head. She looks into Rhaenyra’s face. Fireworks up ahead again: blue-green-red-yellow, jewel-tones. Laena’s laugh, Rhaenyra’s eyes blown wide, the greyish purple of steel, of chrome, and, absurdly, of pigeon-breasts.

Summary
Her heart still beats with her performer’s high, the violin rings through her head, its case is firm under her arm. There’s a soft, dewy rain falling. Haruka unfolds an umbrella over the two of them as they rush down the street: neon-smears of light refracting in the gossamer rain, traffic honking, asphalt oilslick-glitter-wet. Michiru laughs as Haruka half-hoists her over a puddle, an exuberant twirl, a grin into her hair.
Maybe that’s the point of it all. The why. She’s a performer, and this life of hers: that’s the one thing that will never get applause. That’s how she knows it’s hers. That’s how she knows she’s living it. That it won’t kill her, in the end.

Summary
Harrow's favourite saint: Simeon Stylites. Ascetic, lived thirty-six years on top of a pillar, platform two metres square, ten metres up in the air.
They sent Simeon food up in baskets. Little baby Harrow always found that part fascinating – the idea that someone would lock themselves away and make themselves useless and do nothing but exist, and that despite that uselessness, that madness, the villagers would still come together two times a day and send baskets full of olives and bread up via some kind of elaborate pulley-system they had constructed.
She told her therapist once that that’s what love meant to her. The pulley system. The baskets.

Summary
There’s something flickering and humming about the edges of their irises now, something changing, a carousel of her-him-her-him. Pyrrha pushes against their shoulders and they sink back against the concrete with Hect’s grace and blink up at her with Sextus’ owlishness.
‘You idiots,’ Pyrrha mutters, hovering on her elbows above them. ‘You idiots.’
They grin - a great, foolish, happy grin – and it’s that happiness that does it, the ease of it, the truth. Pyrrha laughs, longer and freer than she has in a long time, kisses first the tip of their nose and then their mouth again. They hum, grin wider, those happy young fools.

Summary
“I'm not a man,” Seiya blurted. “I know that's an option, I know that, I'm not stupid, okay.”
Haruka patted his head. “What are you, then?”
His heart raced when she came this close. I want to be like you. But at best, he was the inside-out version of her, composed of all the same material but the writing was backwards and the seams were visible.
She was still waiting.
“...butch?”Seiya loses another bet.

Summary

Summary
Haruka has never won an argument with Michiru. It is, largely, through lack of trying. So Michiru is surprised when she doesn't give in.
“It's not fair.” Haruka swallows. “You touched him.”
“What, so you get to chase cats, and I don't?”

Summary
A particularly unkind feature—to call it one of the worst would be an exaggeration, a dramatique worthy of Cristabel Oct, but it’s somewhere in contention, between “brutally cannibalizing your life partner” and “listening to John’s little me-me references only he gets for eternity”—of Lyctorhood is in their brilliant minds. Their ever-replenishing neurons. Their eternally unstained memories; wherein something might have happened four thousand years ago or yesterday morning.
All of this to say, when Cytherea tumbles into a meaty set of arms and hears a broad, firm voice say, “—give her some air.” her first thought is, oh, Loveday.
