Kaveh’s hands move to cover his face, palms muffling his words as he mutters, “It’s—not quite like that.”
“Well, the ‘sick’ aspect is accurate, at least.”
“No shit,” Kaveh snorts. “The ‘love’ component, though—it’s, uh—”
“You’re not in love?”
He coughs. “The greenhouse in my lungs begs to differ. I—it’s more that my body is mourning a love it knows can’t ever be requited.”
For all the negative feelings Alhaitham’s encountered over the past twelve hours, the sensation that creeps through him now is…
Unfamiliar.
Unknowable.
Despite all the languages he’s fluent in, Alhaitham is unable to conjure a word or phrase with which he can immediately label it. He just knows that whatever this feeling is, it’s unbelievably unpleasant. Like his body is stationary, yet his internal organs are plummeting into the Abyss.
“You love someone who doesn’t love you back?” he asks after a moment.
Kaveh has Hanahaki. That much is known. But who he loves, and whether Alhaitham will be able to save him, is up in the air.

Her voice is as unreadable as ever, so it could mean anything from this is manageable to this is a disaster the likes of which the Flame-Chase Journey will never recover from. As things stand, Mydei is more inclined to believe the latter.
Beside them, Tribbie finally pops up from where she’s been studying their joined hands. “What Snowy said is true!” she proclaims in a voice far too cheerful for their current situation. “He and De are one hundred percent stuck to each other.”
While out on patrol, Mydei and Phainon get hit with a curse that binds their hands together.

Summary
For the moment, Kaveh denies Alhaitham any evidence of the pleasure he is inflicting. He does not make sweet noises, does not chase after the butterfly touches — too prideful to outright ask to be pulled apart, but desperate enough to allow it to happen to him. After all, he had been the one to take a deep, steadying breath before guiding his bodyguard’s hand to the clasp of his outer robe, to say without words: If I am reading us right, do as you will. Please.
By the end, Alhaitham thinks himself a house of cards that does not collapse – instead, one that has found the rare fate of being deconstructed with care.

Summary
The first time his assigned bodyguard unmasks in front of him, Kaveh chokes on his water.
Alhaitham shoots him a dry look as he dusts off the sand caught in the fabric. “Is even drinking quietly beyond you?”
His eyes are beautiful. Hooded, long-lashed, catching the campfire in furls of teal and citrus — sunlit stained glass. Despite their sharp gaze, they soften the firm set of his lips and jaw and, well, the rest of him.The Akademiya assigns bodyguards to students traveling alone in the desert. Alhaitham is meant to protect from typical dangers — the beasts, the cliffs, the temperature. Not plants that leave his charge begging for his touch.
