It’s not very etiquette, Hibari thinks, with his mouth crammed full of sweet chilli crisps. But there’s a spring in his heels and a helium bloom in his guts that he only ever feels chasing Kanato. It must show on his face, because Kanato checks over his shoulder and his expression breaks out like a sunbeam.
“How about it, Hiba?” he titters in the elevator, eyes gleaming. With dramatic aplomb: “This is youth.”
Hibari is a listener, fundamentally. That’s him, summed up. The music man, the songbird boy ‘built for the stage’. Notes in his bones, whatever. He loves music, but it’s not just music he listens to. He hears everything. Sometimes, he doesn’t know what to do with it.OR: Watarai Hibari, and one very temperamental summer 'vacation'—with far too much Fura Kanato.

He flicks on the flashlight, just his phone, and the beam is pitiful: a slice of pallid white, bouncing off algae-slick walls. Water sloshes over his shoe. Somewhere far off, thunder coughs behind the buildings. He thinks about Hibari's laugh, Hibari's obsession with guitars, Hibari's tendency to follow stray dogs, except this time it's been too long. Kanato presses his fist to his mouth. He's not calling out, not when his voice is already half-ruined from yelling all night, not when he can't take the idea of hearing nothing but echo.
The concrete narrows—a culvert? Maybe. Obscene graffiti curls up the wall. Kanato stumbles. Something hard under his foot. He swings the light down—that's when he sees it.Rain spits overhead. The wind picks up.
OR: In this era of warm blankets and shuddering windows, shelter truly is taken for granted. The thunderstorm chews Hibari up and spits him right back out.
