"And I will go to the house of a friend I know, and I will let myself forget. With a little water, and a little bit of sunlight, and a little bit of tender mercy."

The dust settles in the wake of the Engarde case, with a few unanswered questions left to resolve. Unfortunately, the people who have to answer these questions are god awful at communicating with each other.

    It's a funny thing, really.

He was supposed to be having fun at a small little party, laughing and singing with his friends as they tipped wine glasses together. He was supposed to be intoxicated, out of his mind as he blabber about some nonsense that everyone would forget by tomorrow.

It's even funnier when you consider that he was sitting on his couch with a bottle of wine in his hands, staring at the ceiling as the fan spun.

After losing his badge, the only thing that really kept him going was Trucy.

Now, she had Miles as her papa. Phoenix was not needed anymore. Neither by the legal world, nor his daughter.

Miles pauses. Slowly, he asks, “In my entire career prior to my meeting you, how many cases do you think I prosecuted?”

Phoenix’s brow furrows. “Over a hundred, I imagine,” he says.

“One-hundred and sixty-eight,” Miles confirms. His tongue feels like lead. “How many did I win?”

“All of them.” Phoenix tosses this answer out easily. Miles can see his confusion.

“Yes,” Miles says. “I found every single defendant out of one-hundred and sixty-eight guilty.”

Phoenix’s eyes go wide. He leans back. Leans away.

Don’t make me say it, a small part of Miles begs. The larger part of his conscience bares its teeth, sings, say it, say it, you deserve to see the hate in his eyes. He does. He does.

“Out of the one-hundred and sixty-eight defendants I found guilty,” Miles rasps out, “how many were actually innocent?”

After State v. Engarde, Miles and Phoenix have a conversation regarding the former's disappearance. Featuring late night chats, reckoning with the pain one has caused, and revelations on what it means to atone.
