He’d come to terms with that knowledge months ago, when he broke the rules Lan by being outside the Cloud Recesses at night, playing Inquiry for the upteenth time in the hope of an answer.

Summary
When his brother's sudden death in the waning hours of the Sunshot Campaign leaves Lan Wangji sect leader, he has to adapt rapidly to his new role. Getting through the war itself was the easy part, however; for Lan Wangji, navigating the world of politics is far harder. When, at the flower banquet, Wei Wuxian approaches him and offers advice, Lan Wangji sets aside their old argument over his cultivation, and the two of them are finally able to grow closer.
Lan Wangji starts to wonder if Wei Wuxian ever was in jest with his 'flirtations' as a boy, and hopes that he can now approach the man he loves more openly, since he is sect leader and no one can now gainsay his choice of cultivation partner. But the very thing which permits him to court Wei Wuxian also holds him back: after all, can even the seemingly irrepressible Wei Wuxian really refuse a sect leader?
Though he is determined to resist temptation and court Wei Wuxian slowly and subtly, Lan Wangji feels doubt as time goes on. Something is very wrong at Lotus Pier, and it isn't only Lan Wangji who begins to feel that perhaps the safest option is to tempt Wei Wuxian away from Yunmeng Jiang as quickly as possible.

Summary
Despite what Jiang Wanyin and his Sect had done, despite everything, baba never once cursed them as they did the Yiling Patriarch's name. Mourn as baba did for Sizhui's family, for the family that had become baba's own in all but name, never once did he look upon the cultivation world in vengeance. Instead, every breath, every shred of life in baba's failing body had been dedicated to keeping Sizhui safe, fed and loved, as if the slightest speck of grudge towards the world would have tainted his own boundless love towards Sizhui.
But Sizhui is alone in the world now, and he is not his baba - No one else is like baba, and Sizhui supposes that was what had sealed his father's fate, in a world where one is demanded to serve mere ideas of righteousness and honor rather than the people.
And so upon seeing the purple robes amidst the crowd, Wei Sizhui decides that perhaps it would not hurt to start his path of vengeance a little closer to home.

"A family passed through here," the Patriarch stated. His sword appeared in his hand and he sheathed it at his hip. "It should be three dozen Wens. Where are they?"
Lan Wangji felt his lips flatten, offended by the very notion of answering. Considering what he had just seen the Patriarch do to the Wens around them, Lan Wangji could only assume the worst of his intentions.
Something flickered across the Yiling Patriarch's face. Then, oddly enough, he smiled. It was grim and understated, like a calm hand resting on a knife.
"You won't tell me?" he asked. Lan Wangji didn't answer. "You didn't tell those nice Jins."
Above an apprehensive curiosity as to what had happened to the Jins, Lan Wangji said, "Nor will I you."
Those eyes flickered again, this time with surprise.
"Oh dear," the Patriarch laughed softly, as if to himself. "What's your name?"

In the midst of fighting a losing war, Lan Wangji catches the special attention of the reclusive Yiling Patriarch. It's hard to say who is more indebted to whom.

After some experimentation he had created a talisman that essentially created a door to another time, where one longing to see a long lost face could go and see that person again, and return back at the end. After all, he was not interested in reliving those long, painful years even if he could change some things for the better. Once had been more than enough.
He offered it to his dear friend first, thinking of a young woman who had inspired and sheltered them both in times of turmoil “Wen Ning, you could see your sister again! You should get the chance first, then you can tell me if it's safe for me and Lan Zhan to use it as well.”

If asked, Jin Zixuan would have never said that trust would be the thing that killed him. He would have gone for a sword, or an enemy, or perhaps politics, long years down the line, when Jin Ling was an adult and could take care of things the proper way. He never imagined that trust, his trust in the way things were supposed to be instead of how they were, would be the thing to end him. Or maybe it was naiveté, his own, in that moment, when he looked at the angry and hurt expression on Wei Wuxian’s face and chose to believe the three hundred soldiers ambushing him instead.

Summary
Wei Ying has been turned into the kind of nightmare creature that even the forbidden section of the Lan Sect has almost no information on, Lan Wangji realizes. The kind of monster that hungers for human blood, the kind of evil that is so insidious because if it keeps itself well fed, then it is almost indistinguishable from actual humans.
This monster wears the face of Lan Wangji's most beloved person, and the sight of it cuts to his core.
Lan Wangji's hand tightens around Bichen's hilt, but he can't make himself pull out the sword to grant Wei Ying the mercy of a quick death.
OR Wei Wuxian returns from the Burial Mounds not only as a demonic cultivator but also as a vampire. Lan Wangji struggles with that revelation but is resolved to stay by his side.
