“I made lunch,” he tells her, switching topics. “There's stuff you like. Do you want some?”
“No,” Jinx responds, swinging her feet off the ledge. Ekko is quiet again, and Jinx wants to kick herself. “I'm sorry, Boy Savior. But thanks for the effort.”
“It's okay," he lies, staring down at his food. He picks at his lunch by himself.
Nothingness consumes them, suffocating them. Jinx wonders if there was anything there to begin with. There had to have been at some point, or she wouldn't feel as pressed as she does now about how to show Ekko that she still loves him.
Underneath her, six feet below, the warmth of their relationship is trying to claw its way out to reach them. If Jinx were enough of herself, she'd dig deep down to grab it and wield it in her hands. She doesn't want to hurt Ekko. She never has.

Golden eyes. Eyes the color of warmth and longing and honey. Harrow would drink them. Drown in them, if she could.
Her gut twists.
Oh, she wants Gideon.
She wants Gideon so badly that it hurts. The horror of her want burns through her, scorching her pride to soot.
The tears are back, pooling in the corners of her eyes.
“My love,” she chokes again. “My beautiful, incredible love.”

Caitlyn glares. “You're not listening to me.”
“It’s your job to listen, not mine,” Vi retorts.
Caitlyn blinks, taken aback. Then she smiles, ever so slowly. It moves mountains, tames beasts. Vi pauses, her ribs tightening around her lungs as a mirage unfurls behind her eyelids. She can suddenly imagine herself a sunny, bright new life over the mountainside.
“Oh. You're trouble,” Caitlyn teases. Her smile wraps a fist around Vi’s chest and squeezes her lungs even harder.
Vi swallows.
Vi doesn't need to meet anyone new.
But hey, when a volcano erupts, no force on Earth can stop it.

Caitlyn is a social work intern at the clinic Vi is visiting. Vi's got too much on her plate to meet new people, but she's never been known for her rational thought.

“Change of plans,” Caitlyn says, stepping further into the light from the window.
“Change of plans,” Vi echoes, a beat too late to be casual, judging by the twist of Caitlyn’s lips, the unimpressed arch of her brow. Vi shifts again, plucking the hem of her shirt between two fingers and shaking it out to cool herself off. She needs to wipe that smug, knowing look of Caitlyn’s face — give as good as she gets. Or at least make an effort. Vi puts a bit of lazy confidence in her own voice, leaning back and stretching in a way she knows will make her loose cut-up muscle shirt ride up her abs, subtly flexing her arms as she raises them over her head to emphasize their bulk and definition. “Something wrong? Or did you just miss me too much to wait a few more hours?”

Summary
Vi nodded absently, her gaze floating from Caitlyn’s eyes to the couch, where she and Vi had first - helped. Caitlyn followed her gaze, checking to see if anything was there, seeing nothing.
Caitlyn met Vi’s eyes, and Vi had a half smile, a little you-caught-me shrug, something satisfied and wistful on her expression. It tugged at Caitlyn’s gut, that clear sign of remembrance.
“You should come,” Caitlyn blurted.
Vi’s eyebrows lifted. “To your game?”
Caitlyn nodded. “If you want to, I mean. It’d be cool if you came - it’d be fun. For you. Should be a pretty good game - or so I’m told. If you’re free - no real pressure.”
She was spared more blabbering by Vi shrugging and saying, “sure.”
“Really?” Caitlyn asked, eyes wide.
“I mean - yeah. Sounds fun. I never really got into the college rivalry stuff, but I’m always available to watch athletic women.”

“Please, Caitlyn,” Vi whispers. The levity doesn’t last long. She’s begging, pleading, holding the glass an inch from Caitlyn’s dry, cracked lips. “I need you to—shit, I just need you. Everything’s so fucked up. I’ve come back to a world I wish I didn’t recognise, and everything’s gone. Everything and everyone. And then you, you appeared out of nowhere, like there’s still some good left in this shitty, uncaring world, and I just—please. Just a sip. For me?”
Caitlyn’s eyes focus on the still water within the glass. Vi presses the chipped rim to Caitlyn’s mouth and tilts it back, water touching her lips, and Caitlyn finally moves.
Lifting a hand, she knocks the glass across the room. It shatters into three large pieces and a thousand tiny shards.
Vi lifts her hands. She wants to curl them into fists, to beat the ground, to twist them in her hair and scream; she wants to cradle Caitlyn’s face, letting her feel the gentle warmth on the dirt covering her skin, and the skin beneath the dirt.
Caitlyn holds her gaze, daring Vi to touch her.
