Summary
Aubrey could see the pair of them in their mind’s eye, distant as two mountain peaks. Maybe they would never really understand one another; maybe they were too far apart for a bridge. But, Aubrey decided, that didn’t mean they weren’t too far apart for a telegraph line. And before they could lose their nerve, they pulled Max down to their level by their collar and kissed them.

“Alright. Do we know what the symptoms are?”
“Nothing physical, that’s the issue—there’s no way to tell whether someone’s been infected without risking infection oneself. Emotionally, however, the virus causes extremely inhibited impulse control. The infected display difficulty lying, possibly as a result.”
“And that’s all we know?”
“And that’s all we know.”

Summary
There was an old quote somewhere that defined war as “months of boredom punctuated by sheer terror;” Max found themself inclined to agree. As base postings went, Ganymede was less than ideal; the only things on the moon were an army base and an iron mine. No civilization, no conflict—Max hated to say it, but either one would have been welcome at the moment. At least getting flirted at by cougars passing through security checkpoints on the Moon or getting into gunfights on Enceladus kept everyone distracted.
Unfortunately, it was fairly easy to make one’s own entertainment; at least, if one was an entire regiment of marines with access to the Internet. Which is why Max found the loud wolf-whistling coming from the mess hall just so disconcerting.

An...unorthodox photo of Max is released along with their engagement announcement. The Internet loves it; Max does not.

“Oh, Max—don’t worry, you’re still lovely.” he said instead, a wry smile twisting his mouth.
Max laughed. “No, I—shit, January, that’s not it at all.”
“Well, what then?” River inquired.
“I didn’t really think I would live long enough to go grey,” Max explained without thinking.

Summary
It wasn’t frequently that River Gale broke down. There’d been an incident, once, near the end of their secondary education—best not spoken of, other to say that River had taken a thick skin and an unshakeable belief in the structures of power from that experience. But the structures of power were crumbling, now, right before River’s very eyes; quite literally.

“Are you…all right, there?” River hazarded, overcome with relief to find them mostly uninjured.
Max shrugged with the shoulder not currently emptying their lifeblood onto the floor of the bathroom. “I’m not about to go into hypovolemic shock, if that’s what you’re asking.”
River seriously doubted that, but okay. “And other than that?”

Summary
Kuznetsov paused, as though trying to work out how to word something. “That’s the thing, sir—they’re saying that they’re Senator Gale.”
Well, then. Senators had very high clearance, as a general rule; if Aubrey really had shown up to Max’s place of work in order to continue a fight from six hours ago, they would have just been sent up. Max had learnt that one the hard way. “And are they?”
Another long pause. Finally, Sergeant Kuznetsov sighed. “They won’t answer the security questions—you should probably just come see for yourself, sir.
