[Ethan heard the door click shut behind him and turned to ask after the papers when he was abruptly spun by a hand on his shoulder and pushed against the door.
His first and immediate thought was that he was certainly being attacked. Kazansky had him pressed against the door, chest to chest, a hand around his wrist and then- oh.
Oh no.
He wasn’t being attacked at all, it was infinitely worse. He was being very thoroughly kissed.
He pushed back against Kazansky’s chest and tried to think of something eloquent to say.

Summary
After Goose's death during a fight with a kaiju, Maverick left the PPDC and didn't look back. But his self-destructive bender gets interrupted by Charlie Blackwood, showing up to invite him to participate in a brand-new weapons development program, codename Top Gun: the first two-pilot jaegers to ever be deployed in the fight to defend humanity. That means Maverick's going to have to get back in a piloting rig again—and he's going to have to do it while drifting with another pilot. Drift compatibility means getting each other, understanding each other, on a level nobody else can beat; so whoever his partner is, at least he's not going to get stuck with the Iceman, who pretty much hates him.

Summary
Maverick has never left him behind, not once, not since they flew that first mission together on the Layton. Every flight they’ve flown, whether it’s recon or a dogfight, Maverick has been doggedly on his wing. Maverick’s been chewed out for it before, ignoring his own return-to-base orders to help Ice out of many a bind, and now, when the chips are down, Ice is powerless to return the favor. He can’t help Maverick from the sky, but leaving without him feels like sawing off his own limb.
(or—Top Gun: Maverick wasn't the first time that Mav took a missile for someone he loves)

Ice may have earned his callsign for his technique in the air, but Maverick has to imagine half the students think Ice got it from his ability to dole out brutal freeze-burning remarks.

From the moment they met, Mav knew Kazansky had a mouth on him. It isn't until they're both instructors at TOPGUN, though, that Mav learns just how brutal Ice can be.
One thing's for sure: Maverick's never bored, teaching alongside Iceman. He's just not sure he's going to survive the job unscathed, himself.
