Today was December 25th, more commonly observed as Christmas among followers of Christianity, which happened to be a vast majority of the American population. While Gavin was not a devout Christian of any sort—perhaps not even a follower—his tradition was to celebrate it. That also meant the arbitrary customs that came attached to the holiday.
