    It’s still dark out when Ed awakes. He sits up and rubs his eyes in sleepy confusion before he peers around the room, searching for an intruder or something equally dangerous. Waking up in the middle of the night usually means one of two things for him — a nightmare or an attack. This time it appears to be neither, but he gives the room another once over just to be sure.

    He lays back down, settling back onto his pile of blankets. He begins his attempt to resume his slumber, but his eyes pop open again when he hears a noise from the opposite side of the room.
