Summary
Kirk and Spock are the best of friends, to the point that people are starting to think it's a little weird.
Surely Spock can be friends in the Vulcan way, and Jim can be friends in the human way, and both can get what they need from it. Jim can have his lovers and Spock can have his secrets, so long as they both know where they stand with each other.
But when an accidental telepathic link makes Spock an unwilling spectator of Jim's sex life, it gets hard to keep up the boundaries that make their friendship work.

Then Jim registers the contact properly, and his brain immediately runs on overdrive trying to pick apart the whole situation. He brings it to a halt. Spock does that, now. He touches Jim just as casually as Jim does the inverse. It is a fact of his company. He touches Jim—sometimes fleetingly, sometimes with purpose—on his arms, his hands, occasionally his neck. He has set a broad hand on the small of Jim’s back as they walked in an empty wing of the Academy, before. It’s not a change Jim ever expected of their relationship, but it is—likely because of that—one he treasures.

It was a running joke on the Enterprise, that Captain Spock went through first officers like tribbles went through quadrotriticale. Spock found no humor in it, however. Six people had come and gone from his side over the year and a half he had been captain.
But a captain needed a first officer. And for now, at least, Spock needed Commander James Tiberius Kirk.
