Castiel woke to mumbling on either side of him. He tried to open his eyes, but they felt glued shut. His ears were ringing, a high-pitched squeal drowning out the deep murmurs from above. But above anything, he was cold. Castiel was freezing.
He knew he was in the Empty. He had said goodbye to Dean and been dissolved into the slimy ooze that he knew was awaiting him after his happiest moment. In the Empty it was cold, it was so cold that Castiel couldn’t even move. But it wasn’t as cold here. No, he was cold, but the space around him was warm.

The photo was beloved by his mother, Naomi, and the kiss recipient's mother, Mary. The best friends cooed over it every Christmas Eve, when the families got together to celebrate the holiday and the night they met.
Even at twenty-five, the kiss was embarrassing, but not because it was “unmasculine” or because it was a cutesy toddler thing. No, it was because the affection behind the sweet smooch Castiel gave his best friend, Dean Winchester, had grown into much, much more.
Their families, spearheaded by Castiel's brothers, wanted them to recreate that kiss, thinking it was the only one they'd ever had. But that wasn't quite correct.

A witch hunt goes awry resulting in a feminized Cas, and Dean is forced to acknowledge the sexuality crisis this triggers- with all of the usual amount of tact he has when it comes to confusing emotions, of course.
