He turns the water on as hot as it will go. He gets his coat and shoes off before he becomes too exhausted to remove anything else. He steps under the water still mostly clothed.
It’s painfully hot, but he doesn’t adjust the temperature. He leans against the wall and then slowly sinks down against it until he’s sitting on the ground, the water pouring down over his head. He tries to take another deep breath. Halfway through, it turns into a sob. -

It is one in the morning, and Kurt Wallander is at work. He hasn’t moved in hours. His eyes are glued to a case file open on his computer screen. An almost-empty coffee mug sits beside his elbow. It’s been filled and emptied five or six times tonight already, its contents being the only thing Kurt has ingested for quite some time. -
