Shane dropped his gaze. “You’re really going to make me ask?”
“Yes,” Ilya said. “You ask, maybe you get. So, ask.”
“Okay,” Shane said. “I want you to fuck me.”
    Ilya started to laugh.
“Don’t—this isn’t a fucking joke, alright?” Shane snapped. “Shut up. I want it to be different. Or, no—the same, but more. I want you to just make me fucking take it. Shit. I don’t know how to ask you for this.”
“No, no, is good start so far,” Ilya said. “Go back to the part where I get to make you fucking take it. That’s good. Tell me more.”

    Bookmarker's Notes

Really really interesting concept, and I was so excited to see it executed perfectly!

Just on a personal note, I'm in love with HR season one timeframe fics. I love yearning I love chasing I love angst.

Great work I read with minimal distractions as I was timing my reading speed and this seemed like the perfect fic for it.

Somehow stumped in my review as I don't really have any criticism of this work. The writing, the characterisation, the smut, everything was great. I don't think it was life-changing, but with 12k words it really ran from start to finish without a stumble.

Quite curious Ilya in this, I'm being either a blank slate or a mirror to Shane in different scenes here was really unusual to me.

Obviously recommend and would love to explore the themes / a communication of this. Potentially a reread for me even.

Really great smut! I didn't expect to like Shane hoeing it up so much, good for him! Feels a bit OOC in some areas to me but I'm not the biggest Shame understander in this area, so I could suspend some disbelief. Very much "yk what hell yeah"!

To actually analyse the work, there are some serious pacing issues throughout the fic. What should be major plot points being dropped between paragraphs, going from one scene to another without proper introductions, transitions, or breaks.
Surprising considering I found the overall writing on the better side.

Still, a recommendation and a kudos from me!

And suddenly, filling his entire screen, Rozanov was grinning into the camera with a row of bloody teeth. His lip was split. When he wiped his mouth with the back of his bare hand, it came away streaked with red. He spat the rest onto the ice with an awful smile and a wink before getting to his feet.

Jane: Can you stay in the dressing room?

Lily: Are you asking or telling?

Jane: You hate being told what to do.

    Lily: Not when it's you

    Jane: Stay.

Jane: You looked really fucking good taking that hit.

    Summary

Shane Hollander works at a coffee shop, plays hockey, keeps his head down, and doesn’t ask questions he doesn’t need the answers to.

So when a new regular starts showing up—quiet, watchful, Russian-accented, and conducting invitation-only meetings in the back—Shane notices. When that same man takes an unsettling interest in Shane’s closing shifts, his routines, and his safety, Shane does what feels sensible: he adjusts his behavior and keeps his mouth shut.

Ilya Rozanov orders an Americano. He reads, but only in Russian. He worries when people work late alone.

They are operating with very different definitions of danger.

If he didn’t ask questions, he couldn’t be lied to.

    The rules were simple.

    1. Do not ask questions you don’t need the answer to.
    2. Do not share personal information freely.
    3. Do not be alone with Ilya Rozanov.
    4. Do not give him a reason to think you’re afraid.

    Bookmarker's Notes

A beautiful and captivating story. One of the best hollanov fics I've read!

It really took me a while to finish, each chapter was at least an evening, sometimes a bit more. I really really liked the writing here. Truly a rare pleasure to read something and know how much thought, care and knowledge went into the text. Experiencing Ilya Rozanov made me realise how disconnected I am from my culture, and I've been filling a little Slavic part of my heart with everything he reminds me of. I don't think I would remember Pushkin if you asked me to name 5 poets a week ago.

Of course, it wouldn't be my review without some complaints. The first thing that stood out to me and kept bothering until the end being the depiction of autism here. It felt a bit on the nose, at least compared to what I'm used to with Shane. It was less a natural description of someone's character and more stereotypical excerpts and specific phrasing we've seen many times every time I was brought up in the work.

What took me out of the story the most was the conflict in the center of it. I thought the motivations of Ilya were underdeveloped, as well as Shane accepting the issue and immediately taking the blame without having any questions was unsatisfying.

The resolution of this ended up quite beautiful, and not in away I expected. The explanation directly from Ilya felt reasonable. But it still soured my experience with the work.

I think if more effort was put into breadcrumbing Ilya's character and motivations around the time him and Shane get together, it would lead to a more powerful payoff through the reader noticing inconsistencies that Shane seems to ignore.

No matter the critiques, this is a great work that I would recommend to all, and will be looking forward to more works from this author!

Alexis: Considering how he throws Hollander around on the ice, I’m worried about you girl 😂

Jane: Oh, he does love to throw me around.

    Jane: Haha.

    Or,
Ilya’s decision to fuck with Shane backfires spectacularly. And Shane gets a support system along the way.

Silly and enjoyable! Lots of OOC in later chapters but I was already too invested to give it up lol
