    Jiāng Yànlí’s chest burst with pride at these words. She could no longer feel her aching legs or frozen fingers.

     

    Their new brother’s mouth had dropped open as he stared at Jiāng Chéng with the same awe he had shown their father the day he was rescued. “You will?” he asked, hushed.

     

    “Yes.” Jiāng Chéng nodded once, with all the authority he would one day possess. “Wei Yi—Wèi Wúxiàn, I will always protect you from dogs, no matter what. I promise.”

    Mèng Yáo blew out a breath. His infinite patience always deserted him in the face of that man. “Mingjue, I know you think you’re infallible, but even you are susceptible to road fatigue. And if you won’t believe that, consider all the mere mortals who will be on the road with you, just waiting to crash into your blind spot.”
    “I’m not the one who thinks he’s infallible,” Niè Míngjué grumbled. “Spending four days in a car with you is not going to lessen the chances of a roadside fatality, Mèng Yáo.”
    “Do you think I don’t feel the same? By all means, please tell me you were only planning to go alone because you were being arrogant and not because everyone you know is unavailable for a road trip Christmas week.” Niè Míngjué was silent. “That’s what I thought.”

    Lán Huàn is stuck at the airport at Christmas, and Mèng Yáo and Niè Míngjué have to put their bitterness aside long enough to go and pick him up.

    Some drama! Some tense relationship stuff! Some bickering exes who never dated yet! So funny, so sweet, and the perfect archetype of a man in literal angel Lan Xichen. A true Christmas treat.

    Honestly, the poorly lit streets were incredibly spooky. Colourful lanterns and neon signage failed to push back the gloom, their glitching and flickering making shadows dance on the mycofoam walls. Things skittered away from them as they walked; little bots crawled the walls harvesting slime mould, and rats the size of small dogs slinked into the dark as they passed.

    Lán Jīngyi isn't sure about the other boys he met on this night hunt, but he isn't gonna let it cramp his style. The rumours that this borough is haunted are probably exaggerated anyway.
