Summary
It’s not like Ace to be tense, which is how she knows he’s nervous about this evening. Nancy hadn’t planned on still being here when Ace’s parents arrived. In fact she’d come over specifically to help him set-up for their dinner but, well. Time had gotten away from them.
Nancy’s cheeks heat at the memory of Ace’s mouth trailing kisses up the side of her neck. She smoothes her hair again as a reflex.

Seven years later, due to a string of murders in Horseshoe Bay that Nancy is sent by the FBI to investigate, she is forced to reckon with the choice she made, not knowing if her presence back home will trigger the Dybbuk to resurface once again.

Nancy could acknowledge it was selfish of her to drop this on him right before she planned to leave him, but she needed him to know how she felt before losing the opportunity to tell him forever. She was prepared to double down.
“Well, I do.” Nancy halfheartedly lifted her arms, not sure what to do with them. “Love you.”
It was the first time she’d ever told a man she loved them, and it suddenly struck her that it might be the last.

Ace took a hesitant step closer to her. “What do you think?”

She’d be lying if she didn’t admit there had been a not-so-tiny, secret part of her that wished her baby could be Ace’s, however likely she figured it would’ve been to ruin their friendship.
“Would this be an outright donation or did you want to be involved in the raising of this child in some way?” Nancy wasn’t actually sure which answer would be easier for her to live with, so she thought it would be wiser to let the person without the unhealthy emotional attachment choose.
Ace finally looked her in the eyes, expression frustratingly unreadable. “It can be whatever you want it to be. I just want to see you smile again.”
Nancy knew what she wanted, but she would never ask for that.
