"Mike has told her before, voice gentle but firm, that she shouldn't ask Michael about stuff to do with Freddy's and her friends. Shouldn't talk about it at all, with him or around him, because it upsets him a lot, and she really doesn't want to upset Michael. She gets an awful feeling in her stomach when she sees him cry or go all empty, when he'll cling hard to Mike and shake or plead or scream like someone's hurting him, and she really really doesn't want it to be her fault. But there's so many things she wants to know.

He wants his father to cry for him and tell everyone how much he loved his son."
Or, Michael envies the children his father kills. So, after he helps lure a victim, he gets in the way like Charlotte did.

""Michael?" he says. He raps his knuckles against the doorframe, and from inside there's another shuffle, a frantic little burst of movement. Mike can't hear him breathing, as if he's holding his breath. "Michael, are you in there? You okay?"
The silence stretches. Until finally Michael's voice comes, small and tight like Mike hasn't heard it since the night they met, when Michael was talking to his older sister.
"Yes," he says. It's clipped. Unfamiliar. "I'm. I'm here."
Mike swallows. He doesn't know why he feels nauseous. "You okay?" he repeats.
Of all the responses in the world, he isn't expecting Michael to sob."Or, Mike comes home later than he said he would. Michael may have panicked in the meantime.

"The air is even colder out here, but suddenly Mike can't feel it at all, can only feel burning warmth all through him.
Because there Michael is, perched primly on one of the kitchen chairs with a mug of coffee between his hands and Mike's navy hoodie on his back. On—all of him, really. Much too big for his narrow shoulders, but the height he's got on Mike mean the sleeves aren't that much longer than they are on Mike. Just barely long enough to pull down over his hands slightly, bony knuckles peeking out, long fingers wrapped around a mug Mike stole from a diner years ago."
Or, Michael steals Mike's hoodie. Mike's super normal about it.
