“I was wondering if I might have a moment of your time?”
Ed looked around his studio – the paint in his palette had long dried out, and the canvas sat untouched after his random burst of inspiration yesterday. He’d been staring at it for fucking hours now, hesitant to add more detail in case it ruined the whole thing, but still troubled by how unfinished it felt.
“Go on then,” he said.

“Edward?” Stede whispers, nudging Ed’s shoulder and prompting him to blink his eyes open abruptly. He gives his head a slight shake and looks up at his husband. “Still awake?”
“Mhm,” Ed mumbles back unconvincingly, coming out more like a tired groan.
Stede chuckles. “You’re falling asleep on my shoulder, honey. Why don’t we just head to bed?”
“No, ‘m fine,” Ed shakes his head, wrapping an arm around Stede’s waist tightly to keep him from moving and resting his head back onto Stede’s shoulder. Because he knows what that means: they go to sleep and then the night is over. This is the first night they’ve been able to spend together in weeks. He’s not letting it end this early. He can stay awake a little longer if it means staying in Stede’s arms. “Not even tired. Really. I’m good.”

If this man lives— which Ed has no intention of allowing to happen— he could start a whole fresh horror story, could tour the seas telling this brand-new tale about Blackbeard’s specific brand of savage violence. This time, it would even be entirely fucking true.
This time, it won’t be Izzy that kills a man for him, or the flames of a fire, or the blow of a fall. It won’t be committed from a distance, and it won’t be an experience-twice-removed, and it won’t be outsourced to somebody else. It won’t be an accident; it won’t be a legend; it won’t be a mistake, or an exaggeration, or just another myth that sailors tell each other for scares late at night.
It won’t be a technicality that kills the man that killed Stede Bonnet. It’ll be Ed.
