    Summary

Aaron doesn’t really get time off, not the way Kevin does, but Kevin still makes the trip every so often just to see Aaron’s face, even if all he can manage are a couple of hours between classes. Kevin can sleep right through Aaron’s oddest hours but not when he shakes him awake at 6:00 a.m. to shove a printed pamphlet at him with an ambiguous, “You’re ready.” Later, Kevin opened his eyes to see what the Crystal Hill Ski Lodge could offer; even later, he listened to Aaron explain he’d never been skiing either, and he wants a vacation very badly, and Kevin still hasn’t loosened up, and what better time than on Kevin Day’s professional athlete dime.

They split the costs but anyway: he’s on the mountain.

Kevin has some thoughts about finding himself here for the first time.

Kevin slides his goggles over his eyes and glares at Aaron behind them. He knows he’s taking the bait Aaron set out clear as day for him, but it works to rile him up. “The instructor said I’m progressing well—fuck you.”

“Progress well down this mountain,” Aaron commands, flaring his arm again.

    Summary

“I missed you this summer,” he says casually, which is terrible. It’s so fucking Kevin—he won’t say a nice word upon pain of death on the court, and he barely knows how to say thank you when Aaron chucks an energy bar at him to make sure he doesn’t fucking pass out at practice or fixes his bandages for him (in Aaron’s defence, he only took over because Kevin’s attempts were incompetent and therefore annoying, not because he wanted to) or whatever the fuck help he’s providing the walking irritant, but sometimes he’s just so honest that it makes Aaron want to shove his head into the school pool and scream underwater.

“Uh-huh,” Aaron says, because he’s not that easy. “Yeah, I’m sure you had a lot of time to just think about your schoolmates when you were lying on the decks of yachts and elongating your spine.”

Kevin pauses, processing that. “So you noticed?” he says, rubbing the nape of his neck.

Aaron stops, turning to look at him incredulously. “You look like the Lighthouse of Alexandria,” he says. Kevin’s face starts to break out into a slow smile, so Aaron turns on his heel and starts speed-walking forward.

    kevin gets taller. aaron copes.

“He stabbed it,” Aaron says, half a beat too late. He keeps his eyes on Kevin’s face. He’s rocking back and forth on his feet, he realises, ebb and flow. A little closer to Kevin, a little further, back and forth, these small, circular movements, over and over, his feet staying planted.

“Destructive,” Kevin says. His other hand finds Aaron’s waist, trails down his side slowly, settles on his hip.

Aaron’s chest hurts. He says, “Don’t worry, I’ll protect your ankles. He won’t make you normal-sized again.”

“You know, I’m starting to think you’re a bit fixated on my growth spurt,” Kevin murmurs. He’s shifting closer in his seat, straightening up his back a little. Aaron can probably count his eyelashes.

    Summary

Admit it, you like us. Dan had accused him of this once. Kevin hadn’t spent more than a breath to refute it. “Not at all,” he’d said, and ignored every taunt and finger-jab to his arms she subjected him to while trying to get him to take it back. Part of him recognizes he hadn’t been lying—the Foxes are a headache to deal with more often than they are not.

Like right now. They are taking his precious minutes away from the court to go bowling and at this moment none of them are doing that.

    --

In this one, Kevin measures his friendships against how many times they stop to talk about non-important things instead of bowling. Stopped more than 5 times: -10 Friendship Points.

Neil shrugs. “I can probably afford it.” Kevin takes his wrist and puts it on a ball, hoping it will encourage Neil to play. Neil does pick one up, red with green splotches. Kevin thinks it’s ugly and hasn’t used it yet. To the ball, Neil says, “Probably.” He sets it down again and Kevin screams internally when he looks away and towards Allison again. “Weren’t you just begging for a gift?”

“Hardly begging. I just want to see what you come up with.”

“He is coming up with nothing,” Kevin unhelpfully supplies.

    Summary

    “What’s their deal anyway?”

“Andrew’s afraid of romance,” Kevin answers, bored. With a little more concern, he asks, “I’m not on speakerphone, am I?” Aaron snorts and confirms he isn’t, and he’d have been fine anyway since there’s a whole closed door between him and Andrew. Kevin goes on. “But history suggests they will figure it out.” There’s a pause in which Aaron thinks Kevin wants him to be bolstered by his words, but he really is shit at offering any kind of real encouragement. Aaron flips his hand in the air and makes a noncommittal noise, and Kevin interprets that however he wants.

“Aaron,” Kevin says, serious. It’s a complete tonal shift, so Aaron braces for what he thinks he might say next. “You and I—we’re better at arguing than they are. Do you agree?”

“What,” Aaron says, relaxing but still exasperated, “are you talking about? Kevin, we argue all the time.”

“Yeah, but not about anything serious. Don’t pick a fight with me right now.”

Spoiler: Aaron does pick a fight with Kevin, and on the road to resolution, they acknowledge something new—or maybe not so new—about each other.

“Aaron,” Kevin says. He probably means to placate but he sounds so condescending, Aaron rolls his eyes. “I value your comfort in my home—”

“Oh, do you?” Aaron interjects sarcastically.

“—but it is my home,” Kevin continues as if Aaron hadn’t spoken at all. “I have reached homeostasis—

“—You’re so full of shit, Kevin Day—”

“—and I refuse to let your delicate sensibilities ruin what is a cool, not-sweaty, good night’s sleep—

“—You nearly dragged me out of your apartment when I walked towards the thermostat—”

“—because you’re too much of a baby to get into bed.”

“Leeching off your body heat is not an appropriate solution.”

    “We agreed to disagree.”

    “We did not!”

“No, we did,” Kevin insists. Aaron opens his mouth to respond with something snarky but he freezes when Kevin says, “You ended up on the bed, remember?”

    Summary

He’s sitting on the back of Kevin’s bike, one hand holding his shitty speaker and the other on the back rest, keeping him steady in place. They’ve found a rhythm now, the kind of ease that comes with practice, repetition.

Kevin’s back is an endless golden expanse in front of him, glistening with the sun, with the sea, with his fucking sweat, probably. Aaron watches the muscles work in his back, silently reciting them to himself.

It’s for the best that his hands are occupied. It means he never has to put his self-control up against the way Kevin’s back looks beneath the burning sun.

It’s a ritual now. Summer means the beach, means scalding hot sand beneath your feet and the sun searing at the back of your neck and Kevin Day in his stupid fucking beach shorts, riding up as he forces himself to run alongside the shore.

He’s providing shade for Aaron, the line of his torso casting a shadow. Aaron keeps his eyes closed a lot when the two of them are like this, but he has them open right now, just looking at Kevin. He’s tracing his fingers over Aaron’s leg, ghosting patterns into his bare thigh before trailing his fingers over Aaron’s knee, mapping out every ridge and crevice.
