Summary
Mike has spent the last three years figuring out what on earth to do with his life. From painting like will to writing news articles like Nancy— nothing seemed to work. Until, eventually, he turned back to DnD, landing right back where he started. A storyteller.
He ends up applying for colleges to get a creative writing degree, and much to his surprise, he’s rejected from all but one. And the one he was accepted to?
Will’s college.
Mike tells himself it’s a big enough school and that they’ll never run into eachother. He won’t even have to think about what happened two years ago.
And then he meets his roommate, Will Byers.

The voice sounded a lot like—
He turned around.
“…Mike?”
Mike’s mouth dropped open for a split second, his hands going clammy.
“Will.”
Mike silently hid the scroll behind his back, putting on a smile. The silence hung thick in the air.
“Uh, are you my roommate?” The words scratch their way up Mike’s throat, his free hand pointing to the random guy that Will was with.
“Uh, no, it’s-“
“It’s me,” Will interrupts, raising a small hand before quickly putting it back to the bottom of the boxes.

Summary
At first, Mike was unsure how to approach him when he got like this. But they’ve been living together for months now, never further than five feet apart in their dorm beds, so Mike’s learned what works and what doesn’t.
It works when he wakes Will like this, with gentle hands and words, telling him he’s safe. It works when he climbs into Will’s warm bed, turning him on his side and curling up against his back, an arm over his waist and his cheek pressed against his shoulder. They lie together like that until Will’s hiccupping gasps soften into steady breaths, until Mike feels him go limp in his arms and he knows he’s fallen back asleep. It always works.
or: Will has nightmares and Mike is the only one who can console him. Not even Will's boyfriend can. Mike takes great pride in this fact.

Summary
“Looks like I bit you.” Will tilts his head to get a better look. All Mike can do is stare at him. His fluffy hair at the front, clumped pieces at the back where he’d slid his fingers in a mere few minutes before. His pretty green eyes that look hazel or even brown in this light, the dark circles he gets when he drinks framing them like intricate paintings. A satisfied, bloody smile.
Mike isn’t satisfied. He swallows thickly, choking down the words 'don’t you want more?'
Or: Will dresses as a vampire for a college halloween party, but Mike thinks his costume isn’t bloody enough. Will lets him fix it. Mike goes into a crisis.

will pushed one of mike’s boxes to the side, “can you clean this up? i want this half of the room to be for my stuff.” mike raised his hands in surrender.
“rest of the space is yours, picasso.” he gestured to the bed. his music was still blaring from the speaker and now there was the horrifying scrape of boxes across linoleum to accompany it, “what’s your medium? charcoal, paints…?” he drifted off, clearly unable to name another medium of art, “...crayon?”
will shoved his bedsheets into each corner of his mattress, barely looking up, “silence. try it out sometime."
the music paused shortly after.

or will byers meets mike wheeler in a room of darkness. he's loud, messy and slightly socially inept. he's already had the worst last year of his life and he does not need one more thing, or person, piling onto that.
so he's cold. he's icy. he leaves passive aggressive notes on their minifridge (but if mike would just put his socks AWAY).
but the two are destined to be a lot more than just mutually hated roommates. and it all begins with an anonymous radio show Late Night Caller.

Summary
Mike recalls the brief interaction he had this morning in the hallway for perhaps the hundredth time. Maybe his friends can help. Help with what exactly, Mike doesn’t know— but something has been bugging him and he needs to get to the bottom of it.
“Hey, do you guys know that kid that wears all black? Chain belt? Eyeliner?”
“The gay kid?” Dustin supplies.
Oh, that’s right. Mike knew he had heard about him somewhere. He’s kind of famous around school. Well, him and his boyfriend. Even with it being 2006, they’re still the only openly gay people at the school.
Mike nods. “Yeah, I guess. I ran into him this morning. Literally, like we collided.”

Mike has a run-in with Will Byers, the school’s so-called “gay kid”. He takes it upon himself to befriend him, and quickly learns about Will’s relationship troubles with his boyfriend Matt. Along the way, Mike struggles with his identity, and Will struggles with his self-worth.
