Summary
[Mòrag-centric] Two years after Alrest's immigration to Elysium, the queen of Uraya passes away. Her bloodthirsty nephew takes the throne and is eager to wage war with Mor Ardain once again. After outbreaks of rebel forces within his own army, Niall enforces Mòrag to apprehend both them and the king's violent loyalists. She is forced to call upon her teammates to assist her in the arising war, for fear they destroy their new home.

and now, we begin the xenoblade bookmarks >:D
this one? this one is real good. it's a 130k masterpiece with a very enticing plot, wonderful characterisation & character arcs, and such a brilliant expansion on what we were left with at the end of XC2. i was honestly a little hesitant going into this fic (because fics centred around big political conflicts often fail to give me a reason to care about the conflict), but that was pretty much immediately dispelled as the first chapter provided the perfect balance of getting the plot started and showing us how the characters are doing post-canon, and how they are dealing with the new conflict brewing.
and note to self (and anyone else possibly reading this who is wary of heavy topics), for later: yes, the tags are pretty dark. but the tags shown are everything included in the fic, and the story handles the angsty parts extremely well, both showing pretty reasonable consequences/fallout for the things that happened & using the heavy topics when necessary, never once throwing it in your face for shock effect or similar. the heavy topics are used to provide believability for the setting, to support the various character arcs (to highlight the brutality of some characters, as an example), and even in the sections with a lot of these parts never once does the fic feel as though there's no happy ending in sight. so yes, it has its dark sections, but it's not overpowering.
and!! the CHARACTERS!!! god, the characterisation of this fic is wonderful, in all parts. first: mòrag is written absolutely wonderfully (as are all the main cast, but since this is mòrag-centric, i feel it is best to focus on her) and the way she is here feels both so natural from what we were left with after canon, and manages to expand on that in so many ways. her development throughout the fic is wonderful; and the resolution she gets at the end is even more so.
the ocs, too, feel completely natural. not once did i feel as though there were too many ocs, or that the ocs were taking the stage away from canon characters that would be much better in their place; no, you can really tell that each and every one has had so much thought put into their creation, so much depth added to their characters, and the way they are used in the story is just.. mwah. stunning.(and i see the author naming the ardainian rebel group "reubaltaich", which is literally scottish gaelic for "rebels",,, FHAUSDWN)

okay, okay, okay. holy shit. holy fucking shit is this fic GOOD.
now that this fic has officially finished, i think it's about time that i properly wrote out my thoughts on it, right?the best thing about this fic, without doubt, is the way that this author writes link. and... the strangest thing about this portrayal of him is that link is simultaneously the most likeable and unlikeable character in this entire story. to expand a little on that: link is an asshole. he is a piece of shit with hardly any sense of morality whatsoever, no empathy for the people around him, and if i'm being honest i want to punch that bastard in the face. (and other times i was absolutely KILLING myself laughing because this guy really thinks the worst stuff at the worst times). but don't let that put you off at all—because the author manages to write in just enough of an undertone of goodness in his character for you to be absolutely HOOKED on the prospect of redemption. slight spoiler:
and when that redemption happens, the payoff to all that build-up and foreshadowing is just so goddamn satisfying.another thing i love about link in this fic is that he is really, really dedicated to his duty in the yiga clan. he's a lieutenant and for GOOD REASON—because this guy is skilled. but more on his mindset (because imo thats much more interesting): above everything, his duty to the yiga clan is his top priority. that means he'll do anything to further their goals; and also, that he'll do anything to stop people figuring out that he is in the yiga clan, and it's what happens when his secrecy is compromised that always has me on the edge of my seat. i don't want to go too in-depth because hey, some people may be reading this bookmark of mine for a fic rec and i'll just be spoiling the whole thing, but this happens maybe twice during the story—but there's a massive contrast between both who finds out/almost finds out and how they find out that has me GIDDY.
one final note about the characterisation in this fic: for the some of the characters, you really have to squint to see that no, the characters themselves aren't being portrayed in a negative light—rather, link sees them in a negative light. (not that the squinting is a bad thing! the exact opposite, actually. it portrays link's state of mind SUPER well and shows that the author trusts us readers to be able to read between the lines and see the characters for who they are; not for what link sees them as).
all in all, this story is one massive character journey combined with an au of the pre-calamity plot of botw, and the two intertwine so perfectly that i am in awe of it all. i had this recommended to me back during chapter 3 and i am so goddamn happy that it was.
and oh, shit. this fic is getting a sequel. a SEQUEL.
breath of the wild, to me, is a story about freeing yourself from the burdens of your past. a story about starting fresh, acknowledging what has happened before but not letting that define you—instead, using the knowledge you've gained of who you once were to make yourself BETTER. i'm super excited to see just where the author goes with the sequel, and if it follows this little message i've gotten from breath of the wild at all.

sexual assault is, honestly, something i tend to avoid as a main topic in fics--but this fic handles it so well. the overall message is so respecting, and it manages to deal with society's view on this WHILE STILL having an overall hopeful tone, and i... love that a lot. lots and lots of kudos.
