Inside, Hope was sitting upright in her hospital bed, her left leg wrapped in a brace, an IV line tucked into her elbow. She looked up, confused, then startled as she saw the man behind Robby—tall, jittery, mid-thirties with a hollow-eyed stare and a grip on the gun that was far too tight.
“Dr. Robby?” she asked, voice small.
“It’s okay,” he said gently. “Hope, just—stay calm, alright? Everything’s going to be okay.”
The man shut the door behind them and locked it with a sharp click that echoed like thunder in the small room.

“Doesn’t matter,” Marlene says. “You’re capable smugglers. I need her smuggled out. I don’t have any other options. You have to trust me that this is important.”
“We don’t smuggle kids,” Tess grits through her teeth.
“We’ll do it,” Joel interjects. If looks could kill, the one Tess is shooting him right now would have him dropping dead right where he stands. “As long as we get everything we need.”
