This is set post-canon, but the details are left vague because we don't know the entire canon yet. Assume that this happens a few months after the events of the game, they got the best possible ending where nobody dies or gets sacrificed, and the Player/Angel no longer controls the Soul.

Summary
Asriel comes home from college a week early, leaving Toriel surprised and unsure what to do.
But Kris knows something she doesn't. Asriel has just gotten expelled from his prestige college for getting caught with several banned substances in his dorm. He's relapsed. And kris is the only one who knows about it. Asriels unhealthy coping mechanisms are soon passed down to Kris, who shares them with Susie over the course of the summer. Everyone's life is ruined as they fall into the deep, darker, yet darker pits of their own issues.
But then school gets back in, and Kris and Susie find their own little paradise hidden in the dusty old supply closet at the end of the hall. They've already come this far. What's a bit more adventure?
But the world is ending. Conflict is rising inside their small home and beyond it. Townsfolk that Kris had grown up to respect are acting strange. Not to mention humans and monsters both are soon to be plunged into darkness- and no one even knows .
On Kris' shoulders- the weight of the world; in their hand, a red and white pencil borrowed from a friend with a school project due at the end of the week.
And a stolen cigarette held between their fingers.
