Summary
A world where the Avatar has disappeared from memory. Where Sozin’s Conquest was successful. Where the unsteady order of the empire is threatened as members of the royal family are picked off one by one and lines are slowly drawn in the sand.
One last chance for peace forces an unlikely alliance between a homesick waterbender, a carefree Air Nomad, a runaway Earth Kingdom heiress, and the fire lord's inscrutable son. Together they must learn to shed old enmities and become the balance they seek to restore to the world.

Summary
They are gathered in the Jasmine Dragon one last time before they go their separate ways. Sokka is drawing intently, tongue tucked between his teeth, and his artistic prowess draws many a ribald criticism from everyone present. As everyone laughs, Zuko walks by with his tray to hand Katara a cup of tea. Their eyes meet and the laughter dies in her throat.
But then out of the corner of her eye she spots the telltale swish of long silky hair. Mai. His girlfriend again.
Katara forces the smile back on her face, continuing to laugh as though nothing had happened.
Because no matter how many times they find themselves pulled together - by chance, or destiny, or the invisible threads stretched taut between them - in the end, it is their choices that keep them apart.
Her duty. His honour.
What chance did they have in the face of that?

But then a voice cut through her scattered thoughts. A gravelly voice, deeper than she remembered, pitched with confusion and inevitability. "Katara?"
Everything stopped. "Zuko?" she choked out, sputtering everywhere because she had accidentally inhaled her own spit and of course he'd show up just as she was thinking about him, how couldn't he?

Not only must she hide her gender from her comrades, she has to help the Avatar while also dodging the creepy prince who's taken such an intense interest in her. AU for timing.
