“You’re not rotten,” Mike says, vehemently. “You’re a good person, Will. The best.”
Will’s eyes are dark in the low lighting of the cabin. A gust of wind knocks against the window, but they’re both too caught in the moment, in their cocoon of eye contact and soft understanding and warm hands knotted together on the couch.
“I don’t think that’s possible for you to know,” Will whispers eventually, mouth quirking up into a halfhearted smile. “Or have you met all five billion people in the world?”
“Doesn’t matter,” Mike says quickly. His eyes are stuck on Will’s smile, but he can’t quite make himself join in on the joke, not this time. “You’re the only one that matters.”
Will’s smile drops. “Oh.”

Summary
In which Mike just doesn’t think it’s right that Will doesn’t get to experiment with a guy, but luckily Mike’s a guy, and a good friend, so. Featuring closet hookups, hickeys, really good cuddles in the midst of all the sexual experimentation, sneaking around, a canon-typical amount of boys crying, the Painting Lie!!!, conversations about feelings that don’t actually address any of the important feelings (until they do, and then ohh boy), and the happy ending that they goddamn deserved.
Takes place during the eighteen month time gap before they all graduate, then continues past the ending of the finale.

“You seem to be doing just fine for yourself.”
Part of Mike means it to be a sharp and defensive quip, but it comes out as sad as it really is. Will’s eyes are glassy and round and unfairly innocent. Big doe eyes pinning Mike in place. Mike can never escape their gaze.
“What else am I supposed to do?”
Wait for me. Mike can’t say that. He’s been selfish enough. He should’ve said it months ago, should’ve sat Will down and told him everything at graduation, but he didn’t. Now he’s too late. He can never grasp the time that slipped away from him.
or: Mike visits Will in college and realizes just how much has changed. Will is moving on. Mike can't do the same. Everything has changed, except that Mike is still in love with him.
