“What happened?” Basira asked and Daisy looked at her, shaking a bit. She looked so frail with her muscles all atrophied and her hair buzzed close to her head and her eyes open and scared like a deer in the middle of the road, wide and darting.
“I- I don’t.” Daisy fell back onto her knees, barely missing a stack of books as she held on to the cot, fingers sinking into the soft surface. “Shit. I don’t know. I don’t.” Basira realized with a start that she was crying. She did that now and it was wholly disconcerting, like seeing a lion grieving an antelope. Basira had never seen her cry before this. She did a whole lot now.

The hunt takes over when Daisy sleeps. Basira’s forced to get a little creative.

Summary
“Dirk…” is about as far as you get. He huddles somehow even further into himself and your heart breaks. You take a deep, shaky breath, willing any words to leave your lungs.
You try again. “You know you can tell me anything, right?”
You hear him take in his own shaking breath, his head curled into his own shoulder, his knees drawn up to his chest. He nods slowly without lifting his head. You want so badly to do something, to take his pain away, but you still don't even know what's wrong. And so, all you can do is keep your hands to your chest as you wait.
Finally he lifts his head. He slides his feet down the mattress, no longer curling so completely in on himself. His knees still sit slightly bent in front of him, his hands on his shins holding them in place as if to curl up again at a moment's notice. He angles his head toward you, but with how close he is you can see his eyes focused on the sheets below rather than your own. His voice is quiet but steady when he speaks.
“I was going to kill myself.”

Dave wakes up to his stoic sixteen year old son standing in his doorway, voice breaking as he asks to sleep in his bed tonight. And he knows something is wrong.
