Vash shakes his head, because it sounds like that’s all Wolfwood will let them be: a prince and a knight. Nothing else, even if they might want there to be something more.

Summary
He hates the way Vash is looking at him, the disbelief mixed with hope. He doesn’t deserve to have Vash gazing at him at all, not after what he’s done. “You really think that?” Vash whispers, and Wolfwood equally hates the fact he’d ever believe otherwise. “I’m helping make a difference?”
He forces himself to meet Vash’s eyes again, keeping his voice as measured as he can. “It’s what you do, isn’t it?” he says, and there’s a hoarseness to it. “It’s what you always do.”
Having accepted his death, Wolfwood instead struggles with the fact he survived and is forced to find a new purpose. It takes a village to raise a child, but a repenting priest and an immigrant space explorer to raise a whole orphanage.

“Promise me, Nick.” Wolfwood clamped his mouth shut with a click of his teeth. Vash raised his head to meet his eyes and could see his annoyance but he wasn’t going to back down. He felt tears forming in the corners of his eyes at the thought of leaving Wolfwood behind. “I will stop running. I will stay by your side for as long as I can. But when it’s time to let go, I need you to promise me that you will.”
“VASH!” Vash jumped and fell quiet. Finally… “Don’t you get it, Spiky? There’s no point if you aren’t here to come back with me. After Livio… after all of it; I was so glad it hadn’t been you; that I hadn’t been forced to choose between my brother and you. I wouldn’t have been able to choose anyone other than you.” Wolfwood laughed quietly but it was self-deprecating. “You won’t kill anyone but I would kill every living thing on this planet if anything happened to you. Tell me you understand what I’m saying, Vash.”
“If you promise to stay with me, I swear I will find a way to save you.”

Summary
Wolfwood would’ve grabbed the blonde by his shoulders–dig his fingers into warm flesh and muscle–hold him ‘till it hurt if it meant he could somehow convey to him just how stupid he is and just how sick he made him with grief. How deeply he felt that in his core. The way the sorrow raked through his body for hours that night. He wants to pull him gently into his arms like he were made of glass, and not a near-indestructible being.
He opted for setting his weary bones down next to him.
