“You want my help with Elena?” He retrieves the brush and palette from the side table and offers them over to her. “This is the price.”
“But I’m not an artist!”
“And I am not your errand boy yet every time I turn around, there you are barking orders at me like I’m to answer your every beck and call. So, take the brush, love, or get out.”
It’s the first time all night he’s actually sounded like his usual, menacing self, and that twisted exhilaration she feels when he’s towing the line between intimidation and seduction starts to creep back in. At this point she knows the sensible thing is to walk away, let him stew in whatever little regret he’s going to feel later for blowing her off. But Caroline hasn’t had much luck in doing the sensible thing lately, especially when it comes to Klaus, so she snatches the brush and palette out of his hands, walks over to an empty canvas, and takes the challenge in stride.
