Summary
“Don’t cry or scream,” Ash pleas, then shoots a look at Gary. “Or laugh.”
Gary's thoughts jump from Ash did something dangerous to Ash did something stupid to Ash did something dangerous and stupid. He tries to brace himself for Ash's announcement, but there’s nothing in the world that could’ve prepared Gary for Ash to reveal a baby in the basket.
Delia is the first to recover. She leans forward to coo, “What a cute baby. Why do you have this cutie with you, Ash?”
“She’s mine,” Ash says.
Delia goes still. Gary thinks she stops breathing. He isn't breathing either.
Ash has a soft spot for abandoned Pokemon. Gary should've expected that Ash would have a soft spot for orphans too.

Gary half thinks about Ash, half thinks about Applin — he hasn't been able to separate those two thoughts ever since Ash gave him another Applin. He can't ignore that Galar tradition any longer so he examines his relationship with Ash this way and that way, and, one day, he arrives to the only logical conclusion:
It wouldn’t be so surprising if Ash is in love him.
Three times Ash gifts an Applin to Gary and one time he doesn't.

Summary
Ash is sure his ten-year-old self would be horrified to learn Gary is his best friend. Back then, Ash couldn't stand Gary's sense of superiority. He always tried to find some imperfection in Gary's perfection. But now, there's something comforting about his presence, from the dark green shade of his eyes to the proud tilt of his chin and the curve of his lips. Ash realizes he's staring too much when Gary smirks at him.
"Like what you see?" Gary asks.
"No!" Ash spits out, quick and high-pitched.
Ash sees Gary in a new way.
