"Where do you think you're going?" Hans demanded, irritable again.
"What, am I not allowed to sleep yet?" Henry snapped. "And what else does my lord require?"
"Cool your temper, Hal. Come." Hans patted the empty space beside him on the bed. "Or do you honestly prefer that cold straw bed?"
Henry hesitated, his heart beating faster. They'd shared beds before, when the tavern had only a cramped room, or when the forest floor was cold and they gripped each other for warmth.
But here? Hans was in no danger of being robbed or frostbitten… He really didn't have an excuse-
"Henry." Hans' voice was like a slap. "Divest yourself of that stinking armor and come here."

Henry’s smile slips a little, then comes back, even bigger, touching the corners of his eyes, wrinkling his nose. “I’m… glad to hear that. But I’m not fighting for the Lords of Leipa. I’m fighting for you.”
In the Rattay tourney arena, amidst the clash of sword on shield and armor, Hans finds an unexpected softness. A softening of the harsh sunlight, of the thick summer air, of the glare bouncing off the armor in the arena, of the white knuckled grip Hans has on the wooden railing. Of the future, his elusive inheritance, the endless wait for something, anything, to happen. Of all the yellow and black around him, his colors, his town, his fight, his champion Henry.
A story inspired by the Capon’s Champion quest.

After all, Hans was busy charming local lords and he had nothing better to do.
What he didn't expect was that the black knight would catch his lord's attention. Nor that he wouldn't be able to stop himself from responding.
